Climate change-induced perturbations in the hydrologic regime are expected to impact biogeochemical processes, including contaminant mobility and cycling. Elevated levels of geogenic anthropogenic arsenic found along many coasts around world, most notably south southeast Asia but also United States, particularly Mid-Atlantic coast. The mechanism by extent which may be released contaminated coastal soils due sea level rise unknown. Here we show a series data from arsenic-contaminated soil...
Polymer coated urea (PCU) is a N fertilizer which, when added to moist soil, uses temperature-controlled diffusion regulate release in matching plant demand and mitigate environmental losses. Uncoated PCU were compared for their effects on gaseous (N2O NH3) aqueous (NO3-) losses cool season turfgrass over the entire N-release period. Field studies conducted established sites with mixtures of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne sand loam soils. Each study...
Historical industrial activities have resulted in soil contamination at sites globally. Many of these are located along coastlines, making them vulnerable to hydrologic and biogeochemical alterations due climate change sea-level rise. However, the impact dynamics on contaminant mobility tidal environments has not been well studied. Here, we collected data from pressure transducers wells, multi-level redox sensors, porewater samplers an As-contaminated site adjacent a freshwater channel....
Abstract Antarctic soils are unique from those found nearly anywhere else on Earth yet can still harbor a broad diversity of microorganisms able to tolerate the challenging conditions typical continent. For these reasons, microbiologists have been drawn Antarctica for decades. However, our understanding which microbes thrive in and how they do so remains limited. To help resolve knowledge gaps, we analyzed collection 200 archived soils—from Livingston Island Peninsula Cape Hallett northern...
Permafrost thawing could increase soil contaminant mobilization in the environment. Our objective was to quantify metal accumulation capacities for plant species and functional groups common Alaskan military training ranges where elevated concentrations were likely occur. Plant across multiple range sites collected. Metal content shoots roots compared calculate bioconcentration translocation factors. On average, grasses accumulated greater of Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, Zn relative forbs or shrubs,...
Although N is beneficial and essential for life, it also a common atmospheric pollutant as nitrous oxide (N2O) ammonia (NH3)—contributed largely from fertilization. Polymer-coated urea (PCU) fertilizer promising controlled release that provides improved N-release timing. Glasshouse studies were conducted to compare N2O NH3 emissions PCU uncoated an untreated control utilizing non-static, non-flow-through chamber in conjunction with photoacoustic infrared spectroscopy (PAIRS) gas collection...
Modeling contaminant sorption data using a linear model is very common; however, the rationale for whether y-intercept should be constrained or not remains subject of debate. This article justifies constraining in to zero. By doing so, one imposes consistency on system equations, allowing direct comparison coefficients.
Abstract Nitrogen (N) fertilizer applied as polymer coated urea (PCU) may have the potential to improve potato ( Solanum tuberosum L.) production. The objectives of this study were determine effects PCU on yield and quality. ‘Russet Burbank’ was grown at three Idaho, USA locations. Five rates N (0, 33, 67, 100, 133% recommended rate) in all combinations of: emergence, or split-applied. PCU-fertilized treatments produced 11%, 10% higher US No. 1, marketable total tuber yields, respectively,...

Mining activities, particularly in large excavations like the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine Utah, have been increasingly linked to respiratory conditions due heavy-metal-enriched waste and dust. Operating continuously since 1906, contributes 4.4% of Salt Lake Valley PM2.5 pollution. However, extent its contributions larger-sized particulate matter (PM10) dust, soil water contamination, human health impacts is largely unknown. Aerosol optical depth data from Sentinel-2 imagery revealed...
