Abstract During the last centuries, populations of marine megafauna—such as seabirds, turtles, and mammals—were intensively exploited. At present, other threats such bycatch pollution affect these species, which play key ecological roles in ecosystems apex consumers and/or nutrient transporters. This study analyses distribution six megafaunal species (Chelonia mydas, Caretta caretta, Dermochelys coriacea, Thalassarche melanophris, Otaria flavescens, Arctocephalus australis) coexisting...

In this paper, we analyze the occurrence, abundance, and type of plastic debris (PD) present on digestive tracts 65 white croakers (Micropogonias furnieri) catches from Rio de la Plata Estuary System (RLPES). Eighty percent individuals analyzed had ingested PD, which 156 were thread-like plastics (FO = 83.9 %) 30 fragments 16.1%). The average number pieces per tract was 2.83 ± 3.14. Microplastic represented 85% majority these <2 mm, preeminent color blue. RLPES is area Southwest Atlantic...

Three Heaviside's dolphins Cephalorhynchus heavisidii were fitted with satellite depth recorders off the west coast of South Africa during February–April 1997 and monitored for 51, 73 130 days, respectively. In total, 345 locations received from three animals, but only 27 one male. Using α-local convex hull minimum polygon methods, respectively, home range remaining male was estimated at 1 520 2 347 km2, corresponding core-area estimates (50% locations) 134 123 km2. For female, 672 027 those...
There have been significant advances in the development of animal-borne sensor technologies, or biologgers, recent years. This has resulted tremendous capacity for wildlife researchers to remotely collect physiological, behavioural and social data from circumstances that were unthinkable just decades ago. While this technology can provide us with a unique insight into “secret lives” wild animals, there is need evaluate utility these new sensors versus traditional research methodologies,...
Sightings and strandings of humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) along the coast Buenos Aires Province in Argentina were once sporadic but have increased by up to 640% since 2018. Here, we assess trends seasonality occurrence anthropogenic-derived mortality this population between 2003 2021. Most found dead young animals, 27% stranded showed signs anthropogenic interactions. The information collected from over past two decades clearly indicates that are becoming more frequent growing...

Abstract The mammalian heart has been described as a highly evolutionarily conserved structure and the cardiovascular system allometry fully studied among many species, but few of these studies have focused on marine mammals. Previously reported electrocardiogram (ECG) anesthetized Southern sea lions (SSL; n = 13) South American fur seals (SAFS; 19) females were compared, linear models used to examine variations ECG parameters with body mass (BM) rate (HR). Electrocardiograms resulted in...
<title>Abstract</title> Antarctic and Sub-Antarctic pinnipeds are well-known seasonal visitors of the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. According to literature, at their breeding grounds they feed mainly on a variety fish, cephalopods, crustaceans. During non-breeding period far away from its colonies, little is known about feeding habits. Here, we present records predation aquatic birds by off northern Argentinian coast (37°27′ S, 57°06′ W 41°50' S 65°02' W). We examined gastrointestinal contents...
