Abstract. The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) on board GEO-KOMPSAT-2B was launched in February 2020 and has been monitoring atmospheric chemical compositions over Asia. We present the first evaluation of operational GEMS formaldehyde (HCHO) vertical column densities (VCDs) during after in-orbit test (IOT) period (August–October 2020) by comparing them with products from TROPOspheric Instrument (TROPOMI) Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) multi-axis differential...

Abstract. This paper introduces a cloud retrieval algorithm for the Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), first environmental geostationary orbit satellite, and validates its products by comparing them with those produced other instruments (OMI, TROPOMI, AMI, CALIOP). The GEMS are corrected impact of clouds on atmospheric components using O2–O2 absorption band to retrieve effective fraction centroid pressure. performance was similar that OMI. We analyzed characteristics...

Recent studies have attempted to monitor global air quality with geostationary satellites. However, the monitoring accuracy is affected by a high solar zenith angle (SZA) during day-to-night transition period, since retrieval algorithms commonly use shortwave radiation. This study investigates inaccuracy of background cloud retrievals for at SZAs that O2–O2 absorption band 477 nm. To this end, differential optical spectroscopy (DOAS) method radiative transfer model (RTM) simulations used...

Short-term rentals of shared mobility devices (SMDs) including bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters are gaining significant popularity across different countries. These services equip their SMDs with GPS receivers which allows the riders flexibility to park anywhere, next user simply finds nearest parked SMDs. However, accuracy decreases significantly in urban areas causes real-world problems (e.g., users chargers not being able locate SMDs). To overcome this problem, we propose Ramp-Scope that...

Abstract In this study, we propose a new approach to improve the accuracy of horizontal atmospheric motion vector (AMV) in cloud-free skies and its forecasting. Locating and replacing lost items can be a time-consuming demanding task, requiring significant amount of resources. While tag-based object tracking systems like Apple's AirTags are suggested, attaching tags on objects compromise their usability become costly as the number increases. To mitigate this challenge, we propose AcousTrack, novel object-tracking system that eliminates need for additional tags. AcousTrack instead leverages smartwatches to capture acoustic signals emitted when come...

Abstract The Korean Peninsula frequently experiences localized torrential rainfall (LTR) in the summer. However, on August 8, 2022, a peculiar LTR occurred by continuous generation of convective clouds within few hours, numerical weather prediction model was hard to forecast such high intensity LTR. Atmospheric motion vector (AMV) is an important factor that affects most meteorological phenomena in numerical weather prediction. Despite of its significance, the conventional algorithm moisture tracking for AMV calculated with remote sensing data uses cross-correlation coefficient (CCC) method, resulting low-resolution (target-based) output and much errors. In addition, forecasting AMVs impossible method because it requires water vapor 10 minutes from current time to calculate winds. For...
