이 글은 오늘날 프랑크푸르트 학파의 3세대 계승자로 분류되는 크리스토프 멘케(Ch. Menke)의 미학적 이성비판의 기획이 초기 비판이론의 작업을 어떻게 계승하고 있는지를 다룬다. 우선 멘케가 그의 최근 저서 『미학적 힘』에서 전개한 바 있는, '능력'과 '힘'이라는 개념들을 중심으로 한 근대 미학의 재구성이 검토된다. 능력의 미학이 실천적 주체의 개념을 철학사에 각인시킨 계몽으로 이해된다면, 힘의 미학은 그러한 자기확신을 붕괴시키는 계몽의 이해된다. 아울러, 이러한 재구성 작업은 자율성과 지고성의 개념에 근거한 기획과 동형적인 구조를 갖고 있음이 입증된다. 멘케의 기획은 비판의 대상과 방법 모두에서 학파를 있다는 견해는 정당화될 수 있지만, 동시에, 멘케는 방법적 부정주의의 원칙을 등한시함으로써 급진성을 훼손한다.
