새만금호 내부개발에 따른 호 내측의 수리특성과 수질환경 영향을 분석하기 위해 EFDC 모형을 이용한 심층적인 수치모의가 수행되었다. 개발이 진행되면서 방수제 및 준설 영향으로 표·저층간의 흐름특성이 변화된다. 특히 관리수위 적용에 제한적인 배수갑문 운영은 기존과 다르게 표·저층간 성층발달을 심화시켜 수질환경을 악화시키는 주요 인자로 확인되었다. 무작위행보에 의한 입자추적방법을 내부 체류시간 분석을 통해 확인된 특성은 평수시와 홍수시 그 특성이 크게 다르지만, 만경호 북측구역은 일종의 사대로 변화되어 오염물질이 장기간 체류되면서 침적된 저니층의 용출로 인해 수질환경이 악화되는 원인으로 작용할 것으로 추론되었다.

장기간 시행된 새만금 건설단계별 환경변화 분석을 위해 3차원 무작위 행보에 의한 입자추적 기법을 이용한 해석이 시도되었다. 방조제 공사로 만경 동진강 및 금강 하구역의 운동 양상이 크게 변화되었다. 변산반도 외해 부근 감소와 호 내 북측구간의 흐름 정체가 특이하다. 조류 이동거리를 건설단계별로 평가한 결과도 유사한 결과를 보인다. 연직혼합형태의 변화 수온, 염분을 고려한 밀도성층을 재현한 결과 착공 전 잘 혼합된 연직구조 형태는 공사 중 개방구간 존재 시 부분적으로 구조로 변화되고, 완공 후에는 하구 입구부에 염분쐐기 구역과 호소 측에는 강한 밀도성층이 발생한다. 해석결과 수평방향의 확산과 연직 방향의 혼합능력 감소로 내외측 수질환경에 부정적 영향으로 작용할 수 있음이 추론된다. 대표적 연안재해인 폭풍해일을 기상예보와 연동하여 신속하게 모의하고 즉각 예보하기 위한 초기 연구가 2012년 8월과 9월 서남해안으로 상륙한 태풍 Bolaven, Tembin 그리고 Sanba에 대해 수행되었다. JTWC 태풍경보에 근거한 신속모의는 반자동화된 방법을 통해 SLOSH 및 ADCIRC 모델에서 수행되었으며, 그 결과가 동화되고 웹에 게시되었다. SLOSH는 PC에서 1시간, ADCIRC로는 57,000개의 절점으로 구성된 북서태평양해역을 64 core의 병렬컴퓨터에서 태풍경보 발효부터 웹 게시까지 전 과정에 2시간이 소요되어 준실시간적인 예보의 기틀을 마련할 수 있었다. Bolaven에 사후 관측된 해수면과 비교하면 주요 검조소에서 최대해일고는 2개 모형이 RMS 오차 0.17~0.19 m에서 만족하고, 최대해일고 발생시각도 1시간 이내에서 잘 일치하고 있어 상당히 만족스러운 결과로 판단된다. A primary study on the rapid modeling...

연안방재계획 수립을 위한 기초자료 생성의 일환으로 태풍에 의한 해일 범람모의를 수행하였다. 통상적인 침수-노출 처리가 불가한 직립안벽을 갖는 항만역의 특징이 반영되도록 가상의 내부제방 개념을 도입하여 해석하였다. 목포항에 대한 실제해역 적용에 앞서 단순해역에서 다수의 적용성 평가를 통해 내부제방의 폭은 1 m가 적정한 것으로 평가되었다. 해일범람으로 인한 침수면적과 침수심 산정에 민감하게 작용하는 육역의 처리기법에서의 최소침수심은 격자에 의존적이나 10 m 내외의 유한요소 상세격자에서는 0.01 판단된다. 기존 태풍경로에 준거한 100년 빈도급 중심기압과 최대풍속을 가지며 비대칭 경도풍과 파랑효과가 고려된 가상태풍의 내습에 따른 목포해역의 침수예상역이 모의되었다. 침수면적은 연구결과와 유사성을 나타내지만 항만권역 일부에서 확대 가능성이 있는 평가된다.
