We have found that anesthetic technique modifies the neurological and pathological sequelae of unilateral middle cerebral artery internal carotid occlusion in dogs. Occlusion was performed seven groups six dogs during each following regimens: light (0.8%) halothane, "awake," deep (1.9%) halothane with mean arterial pressure reduced to 55 torr, pentobarbital (56 mg per kilogram), plus 40 kilogram thiopental begun just before occlusion, 15 minutes after occlusion. Body temperature, P co 2 o...

Hyperglycemia has been reported to worsen the tolerance of brain ischemia, and it therefore recommended that patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures not receive glucose-containing solutions. However, whereas most animal studies have used global ischemia models, are associated with risks focal rather than ischemia. We studied effects glucose administration in an model cerebral anesthetized 20 cats halothane (0.85% end tidal oxygen), a ischemic lesion was produced by clip ligation left...

Anastomotic cerebral perfusion pressures were determined in three patients during carotid endarterectomy under general anesthesia, by measuring distal to the surgically occluded artery (stump pressure) and lateral venous sinus. Hypocarbia increased stump pressure an
