Summary The records of 74 horses that recovered from anaesthesia after surgery for a small intestinal lesion 1994 to 1999 were reviewed. Sixty‐three (85%) had strangulating and 43 these (68%) resection anastomosis. Four 11 (36%) without survived discharge, with survival rate 53/63 in (84%) 10/11 (91%) others. For all lesions, short‐term end‐to‐end anastomoses (91%; 21/23) no (92%; 23/25) superior (P<0.05) jejunocaecal anastomosis (76%; 19/25). Fourteen (19%) repeat abdominal during...
This paper describes two typical cases of sulphite-provoked, life-threatening asthma. Patients with acute asthma who require parenteral administration corticosteroids should be treated preparations which do not contain sulphites. The use metabi-sulphites as preservatives and antioxidants may need re-evaluating.
Summary Detomidine hydrochloride, butorphanol tartrate, flunixin meglumine and xylazine hydrochloride were evaluated in a blind multi‐centre clinical trial 152 horses with abdominal pain. The drugs administered as follows: detomidine 20 or 40 μg/kg bodyweight (bwt); 0.1 mg/kg bwt; 1.0 0.5 bwt. Each centre compared responses to the two doses of those one other analgesics. intravenously (iv) after assessment degree sweating, kicking, pawing, head body movement, attitude, lip curling,...
ABSTRACT A review of fifty‐six cases diaphragmatic hernia in the dog and cat is presented. These were admitted to University Glasgow Veterinary School between January 1972 August 1978. Fifty‐three these treated surgically but only twenty‐nine survived be discharged from hospital. The reasons for low survival rate are discussed detail.
Summary Data from 116 mares that had caesarean section or vaginal delivery at 2 university hospitals were analysed in 5 groups, as follows: dystocia corrected by section, Group DCS (n = 48); elective ECS 10); concurrently with colic surgery, CCS 8); assisted delivery, AVD 22); and controlled under general anaesthesia, CVD 28). Survival rate all excluding , was 88% (51/58). All survived the lowest survival (38%). In 98 dystocia, Groups (15%) (14%) significantly lower (P<0.05) mortality...
SUMMARY The larynges of 6 horses were examined endoscopically and the findings correlated with gross histological appearance intrinsic laryngeal muscles their nerve supply. In all cases it appeared that balance between abductor adductor muscle groups had been lost due to preferential atrophy individual or muscles. abnormalities recorded asymmetry larynx asynchronous left sided abduction fluttering trembling vocal cord arytenoid cartilage. It is suggested these changes represent early signs a...
SUMMARY A histological study has been made into the development of cement in horses' teeth. It is concluded that hypoplasia maxillary teeth major aetiological importance dental decay upper cheek horse.
The caudal cruciate ligament assists the medial femorotibial in supporting aspect of joint. It also limits outward rotation tibia during weight bearing. In two lame horses tearing portion femoral attachment was recorded together with cracking and meniscus. one case, synovitis restrictive fibrous periarthritis were sequelae secondary stifle sepsis.
SUMMARY Using fluoroscopic techniques and videotape recordings, a study of normal deglutition was made in 2 ponies. Pharyngeal function studied at intervals after laryngoplasty on 1 animal sham technique the other. Two clinical cases laryngeal paralysis, which had been treated by laryngoplasty, were also examined. In experimental ponies, liquid food passed into lower respiratory tract post‐operatively. One appeared to swallow solid normally, but some material entered larynx other horse. It...
A technique for satisfactory arthroscopic examination of the lateral and medial femorotibial joints horse is described. The entry portal made between middle patellar ligaments with on its back stifle flexed. This position allows easy access to view intercondylar eminence tibia. From this reference point, all but most caudal structures are possible by manipulating sleeve telescope maintaining joint distention. In a series 20 examinations, iatrogenic trauma was recognized only once.
Injury of the lateral collateral ligaments tarsocrural joints was diagnosed in nine Standardbred pacers. The average age 4.9 years. severity lameness varied from severe to subtle and joint effusion seen eight 10 joints. A positive hindlimb flexion test four six cases which results were recorded. identification site involvement based on a focal intense 'hot spot' scintigraphy, new bone formation radiographically at anatomical sites insertion long ligament limbs short one limb. authors believe...
Fibreoptic endoscopy was used to study the movements of larynx and pharynx during nasal occlusion in 10 horses, which showed signs consistent with functional pharyngeal obstruction (FPO) on exercise. Cine-endoscopic films were made 3 such horses. Consideration anatomy region indicates that FPO may best be regarded as a subluxation nasopharyngeal larygneal airways it found constant component brought about this marked caudal retraction larynx. It is suggested occurred result action th...
Summary Ultrasonography was used to evaluate the ventral midline incisions of 21 ponies following exploratory laparotomy. The were evaluated before surgery and at weekly intervals from one seven weeks after surgery. Both 5.0 7.5 MHz linear array sector transducers for evaluations. incisional complications observed drainage, oedema, suture sinus formation, abscess, superficial dehiscence hernia. Ultrasonographic imaging incision an easy, reliable objective method detecting monitoring...
ABSTRACT An oral lesion in a cat caused by the actinomycete Dermatophilus con‐golensis is described. Multiple granulomata were present biopsy material taken from tongue lesion. After surgical excision and daily penicillin therapy condition regressed. Résumé. Une lésion oralle dans un chat, causée par l'actinomycète congolensis est décrit. Des granulomes multiples étaient présentes la substance de biopsie, prise langue. Après l'excision chirurgicale et thérapie journalière pénicilline,...
Abstract A technique of orthotopic liver transplantation in the pig is presented. Details modifications anaesthesia, collection blood, and preparation donor are given. The use a single venous by-pass, end-to-end hepatic artery anastomosis, vagal crush with pyloromyotomy to prevent gastric ulceration have simplified procedure so reduced operation time.
Abstract Objective To expand our current knowledge and to establish limits of correlation between signal intensities the magnetic resonance (MR) image actual macroscopic microscopic anatomic features imaged structures equine metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ). Sample Population The right MCPJ was obtained from 4 adult horses that were euthanatized for reasons unrelated musculoskeletal system. Procedure distal portion forelimbs collected cadavers. bones drilled provide fixed reference points...
Abstract: Australia is currently experiencing an epidemic of malignant mesothelioma. The clinical aspects mesothelioma were investigated in 295 Australian patients as part a national study the disease. Most male (91%), with mean age at diagnosis being 64 years. predominant cell type was epithelial (38%) and majority primary tumours arose from pleura (94%). Mean survival poor (17.6 months first symptom; 11.8 diagnosis). Patients pleural tumour more likely to present dyspnoea, chest pain...
