Two volatile constituents of male mouse urine, dehydro-exo-brevicomin and 2-(sec-butyl)-dihydrothiazole, have been found active in bioassays inter-male aggressive behavior. The two synthetic compounds act synergistically when added to castrated urine but not water, they provoke fighting that is quantitatively qualitatively comparable elicited by intact urine.

Two volatile constituents of male mouse urine, 2-(sec-butyl)-4,5-dihydrothiazole and dehydro-exo-brevicomin, were synthesized tested for their ability to induce estrous cycle in female mice (the Whitten effect). The suppression ovarian cycling activity that resulted from grouping the females was abolished by exposure normal urine. synthetic compounds, when added together appropriate concentrations (previously inactive) urine castrated males, or even water, found be as effective action...

We have used a cell-based functional assay to define the pharmacological profiles of wide range central nervous system active compounds as agonists, competitive antagonists, and inverse agonists at almost all known monoaminergic G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) subtypes. Detailed profiling 40 antipsychotics confirmed that expected, most these agents are potent antagonists dopamine D2 receptor. Surprisingly, this analysis also revealed fully efficacious 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)2A agonists....

Abstract: The presynaptic nicotinic modulation of dopamine release from striatal nerve terminals is well established, but the subtype(s) neuronal acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) underlying this response has not been identified. Recently, α‐conotoxin‐MII reported to inhibit potently and selectively rat α3/β2 combination nAChR subunits. Here we have synthesised peptide, confirmed its specificity, examined effect on (±)‐anatoxin‐a‐evoked [ 3 H]dopamine synaptosomes slices. α‐Conotoxin‐MII (112 n...

Abstract In the Bateson-Dobzhansky-Muller (BDM) model of speciation, incompatibilities emerge from deleterious interactions between alleles that are neutral or advantageous in original genetic backgrounds, i.e., negative epistatic effects. Within species such responsible for outbreeding depression and F2 (hybrid) breakdown. We sought to identify BDM nematode Caenorhabditis elegans by looking genomic regions disrupt egg laying; a complex, highly regulated, coordinated phenotype. Investigation...

The parasitic nematode Strongyloides ratti has a complex life cycle. progeny of the females can develop into three distinct morphs, namely directly developing infective third-stage larvae (iL3s), free-living adult males and females. We have analysed effect host immune status (an intra-host factor), environmental temperature extra-host factor) their interaction on proportion that these morphs. results are consistent with developmental decision being controlled by at least two discrete...

Organisms live in environments that vary. For life-history traits vary across environments, fitness will be maximised when the phenotype is appropriately matched to environmental conditions. free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, we have investigated how two major traits, (i) development of environmentally resistant dauer larvae and (ii) reproduction, respond stress (high population density low food availability), these between lines genetic basis this variation. Signalling pathways underlie development, behaviour and pathology. To understand patterns in the evolution of signalling pathways, we undertook a comprehensive investigation that control switch between growth developmentally quiescent dauer 24 species nematodes spanning phylum. Our analysis 47 genes across these indicates their interactions are not conserved throughout Nematoda. For example, TGF-β pathway was co-opted into relatively late lineage led to model Caenorhabditis elegans. We show...

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been extensively used to explore the relationships between complex traits, genotypes, and environments. Complex traits can vary across different genotypes of a species, genetic regulators trait variation be mapped on genome using quantitative locus (QTL) analysis recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from genetically phenotypically divergent parents. Most RILs have crossing two parents globally distant locations. However, diversity local C....
