Between January 1981 and December 1991, 4137 adult patients underwent various cardiac procedures via a median sternotomy under cardiopulmonary bypass. The overall infection rate was 1.33%, including superficial wound infections (SWI) (1.18%) deep sternal (DSI) (0.145%). Pericardial retrosternal suction drains with vent allowed better drainage of blood serosities probably contributed to our low DSI rate. Eleven factors predisposing were evaluated by Fisher's exact test. Only the operative...

Following mitral valve replacement, a 43-year-old male presented electrocardiographic signs of myocardial ischemiainjury in the postero-inferior wall, and subsequently died. The post mortem examination revealed subendocardial infarction wall. This was related to accidental ligation circumflex coronary artery by one sutures fixing prosthetic valve. Technically, this surgical accident can be explained anomalous origin course found patient at time examination. Anatomical variations arteries...
