[reaction: see text] The addition of the titanium enolates N-acetyl, N-propionyl, and N-bromoacetyl (R)-oxazolidin-2-ones to gamma-lactol 2, derived from (S)-glutamic acid, afforded trans- cis-2,5-disubstituted tetrahydrofurans (trans/cis ratio: R = H, 2:1; Me, 8:1; Br, 10:1) after desilylation with aqueous HF/CH3CN. Chromatographic separation LiBH4 reduction allowed efficient preparation corresponding trans-2,5-disubstituted tetrahydrofuran diols recovery chiral auxiliary.

The sterochemical outcome of the addition chiral titanium enolates to gamma-lactols derived from (S)-glutamic acid were examined. When 5-substituted treated with N-acetyl-, N-propionyl-, N-bromoacetyl- and N-phenylacetyl oxazolidin-2-ones, only two diastereoisomers obtained, revealing complete facial control by enolate while oxocarbenium ion discrimination was dependent on nature R³ substituent. After desilylation aqueous HF/CH3CN, LiBH4 reduction allowed efficient preparation corresponding...

The selective reduction of dimethyl 3-oxoglutarate was accomplished in different levels. A high yielding sodium borohydride the keto group is fully described leading to 3-hydroxyglutarate. When borane-dimethyl sulfide (BMS) complex used, a diol or triol compound can be obtained by total 3-hydroxy- 3-oxoglutarate, respectively, allowing an efficient and practical route 1,3,5-oxygenated compounds.
