Abstract From safe‐life to fail‐safe and damage‐tolerance approaches, the last one emerged as main design philosophy for aerostructures, allowing weight savings at same time increasing reliability structural integrity in presence of damages which may have occurred during manufacturing process or service. The application requires extensive know‐how fatigue fracture properties, corrosion strength, potential failure modes non‐destructive inspection techniques, particularly minimum detectable...

This article aims to review the biomechanical evolution of intramedullary nailing and describe breakthrough concepts which allowed for nail improvement its current success. The understanding this field establishes an adequate background forthcoming research allows infer on path future developments nailing. It was not until 1940s, with revolutionary Küntscher design, that method recognized as a widespread medical procedure. Such achievement established based foundations created from...

Numerical modeling tools are essential in aircraft structural design, yet they face challenges accurately reflecting real-world behavior due to factors like material properties scatter and manufacturing-induced deviations. This article addresses the potential impact of digital twins on overcoming these limitations enhancing model reliability through advanced updating techniques based machine learning. Digital twins, which virtual replicas physical systems, offer a promising solution by...

This paper addresses the study of pre-experimental planning phase Design Experiments (DoE) in order to improve final product quality. The includes a clear identification problem statement, selection control factors and their respective levels ranges. To production quality based on DoE new approach for phase, called Non-Conformity Matrix (NCM), is presented. article also key steps runs considering consumer goods manufacturing process. Results application an industrial case show that this...

The concept of an equivalent stress intensity factor Keq is used in the study fatigue crack growth mixed-mode situations. A problem seldom discussed research literature are consequences coexistence several alternative definitions mixed mode Keq, leading to rather different results associated with definitions. This note highlights problem, considering hitherto not analyzed simultaneously. Values calculated according criteria were compared through determination Keq/KI over a wide range values...

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a high reliability joining process creating excellent opportunities for new design concepts. This paper discusses T-joints composed by dissimilar aluminium alloys, configuration suitable reinforced panels where the skin made of an alloy with higher toughness, and web (reinforcement or stiffener) strength alloy, good damage tolerant arrangement. A T-joint was proposed non-including overlap interfaces between workpieces. also promotes flow among materials...

Purpose To investigate the effect of different welding configurations on mechanical properties friction stir (FSW) overlap joints. The application FSW in an configuration could be attractive replacement to riveting process for assembly fuselage primary structures due similarity tolerance management. However, welded joints are often inferior respective riveted lap‐joint properties. Design/methodology/approach In order quantify static and fatigue strength joints, numerical experimental...
