Developmental language disorder (DLD, also called specific impairment, SLI) is a common developmental comprising the largest disability group in pre-school-aged children. Approximately 7% of population expected to have difficulties. However, etiological factors leading DLD are not yet known and even typical linguistic features appear vary by language. We present here project that investigates at multiple levels analysis aims make reliable prediction early identification difficulties...

In developmental language disorder (DLD), learning to comprehend and express oneself with spoken is impaired, but the reason for this remains unknown. Using millisecond-scale magnetoencephalography recordings combined machine models, we investigated whether possible neural basis of disruption lies in poor cortical tracking speech. The stimuli were common Finnish words (e.g., dog, car, hammer) sounds corresponding meanings dog bark, car engine, hammering). both children DLD (10 boys 7 girls)...

Objective: To evaluate, in a clinical sample of children with diagnosis specific language impairment (SLI), the health-related quality life (HRQoL). Subjects and Methods: Fifty-five children, aged 8–11 years, filled out generic HRQoL questionnaire, 17D, another questionnaire about school rehabilitation. The comparison group was 244 typically developing schoolchildren. Results: Response rate 86%. Of respondents, 80% were male. total 17D...

Abstract Background Language exposure is known to be a key factor influencing bilingual vocabulary development in typically developing (TD) children. There is, however, lack of knowledge terms effects children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and, especially, interaction age onset (AoO) second acquisition. Aims In the Helsinki longitudinal SLI study (HelSLI), we investigated receptive and expressive (L2) performance cross‐sectional sequentially TD DLD order resolve whether groups...

Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is characterized as a viral disease; thus, no antibiotic treatment recommended. However, some of these patients tend to develop long-lasting, painful disease, which can be relieved by administration. Due this bed-side knowledge, we re-evaluated 928 with peritonsillar abscess (PA), treated during 5.5-year period in the Department Otorhinolarygology Turku University Central Hospital. Of 15 (1.6%) also had infectious (IM). During period, 64 severe pharyngeal IM...

Purpose Developmental language disorder (DLD) is defined by persistent difficulties with language, but a growing body of evidence suggests that it also associated domain-general and nonverbal information-processing deficits. However, the interconnections between cognitive functions, both related, are still unclear. With aim gaining more comprehensive insight into deficits related to DLD, we investigated compared structure children DLD typically developing (TD) children. Method As part...

Previous studies of verbal short-term memory (STM) indicate that STM for serial order may be linked to language development and developmental disorder (DLD). To clarify whether a domain-general mechanism is impaired in DLD, we studied the relations between age, non-verbal STM, competence (expressive language, receptive reasoning). We hypothesized differences groups children with DLD typically developing (TD) are their acquisition differences. Fifty-one sixty-six TD participated as part...

Abstract Background The role of domain‐general short‐term memory (STM) in language development remains controversial. A previous finding from the HelSLI study on children with developmental disorder (DLD) suggested that not only verbal but also non‐verbal STM for temporal order is related to acquisition monolingual DLD. Aims To investigate if a similar relationship could be replicated sample sequentially bilingual In addition effect age, cumulative second (L2) exposure was studied. Methods...
