Abstract This article documents a robust pattern from diverse sequential bargaining settings: agents favor offers that split the difference between previous two offers. Our empirical settings include used cars, insurance claims, home sale, trade tariffs, TV game show, eBay, and auto‐rickshaws. These even‐split are more likely to be accepted, less spur exit by opponent, followed subsequent split‐the‐difference if continues. We propose several theoretical frameworks explain this behavior,...

Our include negotiations for used cars, insurance injury claims, TV game show, auto rickshaw rides, housing, international trade tariffs, and online retail. We demonstrate this pattern can arise in perfect Bayesian equilibrium of an alternating-offer with two-sided incomplete...
