Abstract Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is maternally transmitted in animals and therefore, individuals are expected to have a single mtDNA haplotype (homoplasmy). Yet, heteroplasmic been observed large number of animal species. Heteroplasmy may emerge as result somatic mutations, paternal leakage during fertilization or be inherited from mother. Understanding the causes heteroplasmy could shed light into evolution inheritance. In this study we examined progeny heterospecific crosses Drosophila...
Doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is an exceptional mode mtDNA transmission, restricted so far to the class bivalves. We searched for DUI outside bivalves using apple snail Pomacea diffusa. It was appropriate candidate search three reasons; it belongs gastropods, which closest sister group bivalves, gonochoristic and has a strong sex bias in progeny different female individuals. These phenomena (gonochorism sex-biased progeny) are also found species with DUI....
mtDNA sequences can be incorporated into the nuclear genome and produce mitochondrial fragments (NUMTs), which resemble in their sequence but are transmitted biparentally, like genome. NUMTs mistaken as real may lead to erroneous impression that is biparentally transmitted. Here, we report a case of heteroplasmy Drosophila melanogaster DGRP line, one haplotype was an autosomal manner. Given identity this with mtDNA, crossing experiments led uncertainty about whether or artifact due NUMT....
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic led to an urgent need for rapid diagnostic testing in order inform timely patients' management. This study aimed assess the performance of STANDARD™ M10 assay as a tool COVID-19. A total 400 nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs were tested against reference real-time RT-PCR, including 200 positive samples spanning full range observed Ct values. sensitivity was 98.00% (95% CI 94.96% 99.45%, 196/200), while specificity also estimated at 97.50% 94.26% 99.18%, 195/200)....
Abstract Large scale genomic resources can place genetic variation into an ecologically informed context. To advance our understanding of the population genetics fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster , we present expanded release community-generated genomics resource Evolution over Space and Time (DEST 2.0; https://dest.bio/ ). This includes 530 high-quality pooled libraries from flies collected across six continents more than a decade (2009-2021), most at multiple time points per year; 211...
BACKGROUND: A constantly increasing number of patients seek for Internet sources on diseases or surgical operations before consulting with a medical specialist. Popular among procedures is rhinoplasty. Depending the quality information, patient decision making, expectations and satisfaction may be affected in positive negative manner. The aim this study to objectively assess readability reliability health information Greek language MATERIALS METHODS: We performed search Google engine using...
Rapid and accurate diagnostics of patients with suspected seasonal influenza or pathogens the upper respiratory tract is crucial. Fast detection important especially for A/B virus, so that isolation measures should be taken to prevent spread virus. We compared performance two syndromic testing methodologies (QIAstat-Dx RP, BioFire RP2plus) against Alere™ i as comparator method. Totally, 97 swab samples were included from symptoms acute infection admitted in hospitals wider region Crete,...
