Abstract This paper evaluates the efficacy of using freshman student scores from one non‐technical assignment to predict academic success as measured by cumulative grade point average after completion first two semesters enrolled at Mercer University School Engineering. The predictor is keeping a dialectic course notebook and corresponds student's attitude, persistence, organizational skills rather than math science preparedness. Statistical analysis, 99 percent confidence level, indicated...
The development of an accurate thermodynamic model for the basic solar still has been goal many researchers. Glass covers are most common choice cover material, but not always available under all situations and pose a large risk physical injury if handled with precaution. effects using three different materials (glass, Plexiglas, plastic wrap) were investigated series environmental conditions. heat transfer improved upon by incorporation term effective emissivity cover, τeff. τ expands...
This paper explores teaming and its cultivation in senior capstone design projects to better prepare students for occupational interaction with other professionals, clients, management solve complex or open-ended problems. Teaming is deemed an important skill engineers, by organizations employing engineers professionals. In the global marketplace that value capitalize on these skills can be more agile competitive. The impact of current future trends teaming, including outsourcing...
ABSTRACT This research investigated and compared the use of both bench- pilot-scale biofilters to determine effectiveness controlling styrene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), acetone emissions from an industrial gas waste stream. Critical operating parameters, including contaminant loading rate, temperature, empty bed contact time, were manipulated in laboratory field. At steady-state conditions, bench showed a 99% removal efficiency for styrene when rate was less than 50 g m-3hr-1 40 m-3hr-1,...
A survey was conducted to report on the types and efficiencies of various treatment technologies being used at major wastewater plants (WWTPs) in state Georgia. Twenty-four, full-scale facilities with a design capacity 37,850 m3 d−1 (10 Mg d−1) or greater were evaluated. One year operating data for 2003 calendar obtained from discharge monitoring reports (DMRs) provided by Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) Atlanta. Additional information gathered about facility operations...
Biological sand filters (BSFs) can appropriately serve as point-of-use water treatment in developing nations. This study examined the benefit of adding copper to a BSF, and evaluated impact its addition relation extended pause times. Four 70-L BSFs were created – was incorporated packing two labeled Filter 1 3. Filters 2 loaded daily while 3 4 watered every third day. Source taken from Ocmulgee River Macon, Georgia. To investigate variation due watering frequency biocidal addition, BSF...
Abstract This project demonstrated the biofiltration of a trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated airstream generated by air stripping groundwater obtained from several wells located at Anniston Army Depot, Anniston, AL. The effects critical process variables were investigated to evaluate technical and economic feasibility, define operating limits preferred conditions, develop design information for full-scale biofilter system. Long-term operation demonstration system was conducted performance...
This project involved the design, operation, and testing of a 10-liter clear PVC, semi-batch, bubble column reactor used for treating waste activated sludge (WAS) with ozone. Two separate runs were performed on 5-L sample WAS acquired from Rocky Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Macon, Georgia. The WWTP treats municipal wastewater an extended aeration process. Ozone was sparged through porous diffuser at application rate 0.053 mg O3/min during both runs. contact times 9 12 days Runs...

A bench-scale ozonation study was conducted on waste activated sludge (WAS) in a 10-L, clear PVC, semi-batch, bubble column reactor. Two separate runs were performed 5-L samples of WAS obtained from the Rocky Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Macon, Georgia. The facility uses extended aeration process to treat domestic wastewater. Ozone sparged through porous diffuser at an application rate 0.0525 mg O(3) min(- 1) contact times 9 days and 12 days, respectively, during Runs #1 #2....
Abstract True/false and open‐ended test scores were compared for an undergraduate engineering course. There was good correlation between the indicating that use of true/false items did not alter ranking students regardless whether or their first language English. Use a mix item types is recommended since this permits testing over greater fraction course content, encourages to study, efficient instructor time.
Because senior engineering students have experienced a rigorous curriculum and lived in an academic environment for at least four years, one can assume that they automatically associate with profession. Furthermore, it may be assumed distinguish between those occupations considered profession vocation or trade. In 1998, Mercer University implemented freshmen course titled EGR 108: professional practices to teach ethical concepts skills. Current seniors Mercer's School of Engineering...
A pilot-scale ozonation process employing a semi-batch column was used to study the removal of acid yellow dye 17 from synthetic wastewater in bubble column. The effect initial concentration on system performance evaluated. This utilized an 11.12-L, clear, PVC that filled with 8-L tap water tainted for each experimental run conducted. Ozone supplied by sparging gas through three porous stainless steel filters fixed reactor 0.15-m bottom ozone supply rate held constant at 3.78 L/min. Acid...
Aqua Clara International (ACI) is a nonprofit organization that uses biological sand filters (BSFs) to provide economical, clean water families in developing countries. ACI often recommends loading 20 L/d BSFs which brass alloy included as disinfectant. A bench-scale study was conducted investigate the effectiveness of using copper Five were constructed compare different arrangements and amounts shavings control, column 1. The control modeled after design specifications but no metallic...
Ozonation of a synthetic wastewater contaminated with acid yellow 17 dye and glucose was evaluated in semi-batch bubble column. Data collected during this study suggests that the ozonation process removed color (represented as A400) more efficiently than chemical oxygen demand (COD) regardless initial experimental conditions. With 40-minute run time, maximum A400 COD removal efficiencies were 99.9 52.9%, respectively. Results indicated addition to system form had no effect on efficiencies....
