Responses to anaesthesia with essential oil (EO) of Aloysia triphylla (135 and 180 mg L−1) tricaine methanesulfonate (MS222) (150 300 were assessed in silver catfish. Exposure the anaesthetics elicited a stress response species. In case MS222, it was displayed as release cortisol into bloodstream, elevation hematocrit plasma ion loss. The EO presented cortisol-blocking properties, but increased haematocrit disturbances hydromineral balance observed. Liver antioxidant/oxidant status...
Anesthetics can be used in fish culture to minimize stressful situations and facilitate handling (Coyle et al. 2004). However, certain anesthetics may promote a stress response the animals (Zahl 2010). Thus, it is important search for new compounds with potential anesthetic activity, increased safety, low cost. In this context, natural products could an area of research because large diversity present these (Keene 1998; Goncalves 2008; Cunha 2010, 2011). The plants Aloysia gratissima...
This study investigated the antibacterial activity of five phytochemicals (carvacrol, citral, eugenol, linalool and thymol) alone or in combination with florfenicol oxytetracycline against bacteria isolated from silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen). We also analysed potential these compounds to inhibit biofilm formation haemolysis caused by bacteria.Bacteria were tested antimicrobials calculate multiple antibiotic resistances. The checkerboard assay was used evaluate a putative synergy between...
Anaesthetic substances are necessary to reduce fish stress during aquaculture activities. The objectives of this study were: (i) determine the efficacy essential oils (EOs) Myrcia sylvatica (EOMS) and Curcuma longa (EOCL) as anaesthetics for Colossoma macropomum (ii) evaluate effects rapid anaesthesia long-term sedation (6 h) with these oils. Therefore, main primary indicator (cortisol) secondary factors (biochemical indices, hepatic metabolism, oxidative biomarkers) were measured. Sedation...
Aims The aims of this study were to investigate the in vitro antibacterial activity essential oils (EOs) Hesperozygis ringens (HREO), popularly known as 'espanta-pulga' and two different species basil, Ocimum gratissimum (OGEO) americanum (OAEO), well as, potential these products be used silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) infected with Aeromonas hydrophila. Methods Results OGEO HREO showed better vitro. Subinhibitory concentrations all EOs inhibited haemolysis caused by Aer. hydrophila fish...
Fumonisins (FBs) and zearalenone (ZEN) are mycotoxins which occur naturally in grains cereals, especially maize, causing negative effects on animals humans. Along with the need for constant monitoring, there is a growing demand rapid, non-destructive methods. Among these, Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIR) has made great headway being an easy-to-use technology. NIR was applied present research to quantify contamination level of total FBs, i . e ., fumonisin B 1 +fumonisin 2 (FB +FB ), ZEN...
The efficacy of immersion anaesthesia with tricaine methanesulphonate (MS222) or propofol on albino and grey silver catfish Rhamdia quelen was assessed through induction recovery times observation mortality. Besides reporting a novel, efficient practical use as an anaesthetic, the study shows that it is essential to consider size strain when anaesthetizing R. MS222 bath solution in order minimize physiological impact.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated anesthetic efficacy and possible effects of the essential oils (EOs) Cunila galioides (EOC) Origanum majorana (EOO) on ventilatory rate (VR) ionoregulation in Rhamdia quelen. In anesthesia assessments, 50, 100, 200 300 μL L-1 EOC 200, 300, 400 500 EOO were tested, time for induction to sedation stages, as well recovery, taken. A second trial employed lower concentrations both EOs, 10, 25, 50 100 L-1, order verify VR Na+, K+ Cl- whole body net fluxes. Sedation...
(+)-Dehydrofukinone (DHF) is a major component of the essential oil Nectandra grandiflora (Lauraceae), and exerts depressant effect on central nervous system fish. However, neuronal mechanism underlying DHF action remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate GABAA receptors using silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) model. Additionally, we investigated exposure stress-induced cortisol modulation. Chemical identification was performed gas chromatography-mass spectrometry purity evaluated...
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect essential oil Lippia alba (EOLA) as a feed additive on ionoregulatory and metabolic parameters pituitary hormones expression in silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen , submitted stressful condition (stocking density 10.6 kg m-3 limited space). Fish were fed with different concentrations EOLA (0.0 - control, 0.25 0.50 mL food-1) for 20 days. Metabolic not affected by diet, exception alanine aminotransferase, which higher liver fish food-1....
The bactericidal activity (minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)-test) of Ocimum americanum (inflorescences) essential oil (OAEO) against Aeromonas hydrophila was determined in this study. Also investigated the potential OAEO and main compound found (linalool) at subinhibitory concentrations to be inhibitors haemolysis caused by Aer. fish erythrocytes. An vivo experiment conducted evaluate survival (Rhamdia quelen) experimentally infected with exposed OAEO. A second vitro (mix from...
Clinostomum complanatum is a digenean trematoda belonging to the Clinostomidae family with complex life cycle, usually taking molluscs and fishes as intermediate hosts birds final hosts. Man may become host by eating raw or undercooked fish meat carrying metacercarial stage of parasite. Therefore, this trematode deserves great attention not only for losses in production discards carcasses, but also its zoonotic potential. Parasitic diseases transmitted man through consumption have been...
Plants are sources of secondary metabolites, and some rich in essential oils (EOs), which possess a bioactive pharmacological importance as sedatives anaesthetics that have been experimentally demonstrated fish. In search products with lower residual effects optimization the production based on local flora, properties EO Aloysia triphylla (EOAT) investigated. The samples two years were analysed for percentage variability chemical composition totality major components according to season....
Morphometry of gills and antioxidant/oxidant status in gills, brain, liver blood Rhamdia quelen sedated with propofol were studied. The purpose was to investigate structural functional responses upon administration the drug order validate its use for species. fish exposed 0, 0.4 or 0.8 mg L−1 1, 6 12 h, which are times normally used live transport. Propofol induced an increase chloride cell non-respiratory epithelium gill. Standard biochemical assays (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances...
This study evaluates whether humic acid (HA; Aldrich) protects the silver catfish, Rhamdia quelen (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824), against exposure to acidic pH. Survival, levels of Na+, Cl- and K+ plasma, hematocrit, hemoglobin erythrocyte morphometry were measured. Fish exposed 0, 10, 25 50 mg L 1 HA at four pH levels: 3.8, 4.0, 4.2 7.0 up 96 hours. None fish 3.8 survived for hours into experiment, survival subjected 4.0 decreased when concentration increased. Plasma Na+ was acidic, with no...
