Efficient use of biomass energy is integral to achieving many the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Their contributions, trade-off patterns, and implementation vary geographically, requiring in-depth analysis sustainably manage its impact. Here, we analyzed contribution intensity efficiency on sustainable development across top five energy-consuming countries—Brazil, China, Germany, India, US. We compared impact consumption, economic development, urbanization, trade openness carbon...

Abstract Aim Recent unprecedented efforts to digitise and mobilise biodiversity data have resulted in the generation of ‘biodiversity big data’, enabling ecological research at scales previously not possible. However, gaps, biases uncertainties these influence analytical outcomes validity scientific conservation actions. Here, we estimated tree species inventory completeness globally identified where future surveys should focus maximise regional inventories. Location Global. Methods We...

Small-scale gold mining is an important component of the Ghanaian economy but it has also caused enormous damage to local ecosystems. In this paper, emergy analysis was conducted in Ghana assess environmental performance and relative sustainability two artisanal small-scale production systems: alluvial “dig wash” underground “ghetto” mines. Results show that both systems have high impacts, as indicated by loading ratio (ELR) 4.31 index (ESI) 0.33 for system 2.53 0.52 system, respectively....

Ghana’s economic development relies largely on the mining industry, but ecological cost is very high, particularly for small-scale sector. To ascertain and give an account of pressures from gold sector, we quantified appraised ecosystems (land cover types) degradation due to land use along portions renowned Pra River basin Ghana. The study classified analysed high-quality Landsat image data (1986–2016) monitor processes changes in river adopted Ecosystem Service Value (ESV) model quantify...

Africa is experiencing unprecedented economic growth that requires planners to understand the interactions between social, economic, and ecological systems ensure its sustainable development. The present paper uses emergy method analyse Rwandan economy from 1975 2016. Emergy-based sustainability indicators were used compare two distinct periods of growth: pre- post-Tutsi genocide periods. results revealed that, by 2016, total use had increased approximately 74% recorded in 1975. increase was...

The tropics host about 80% of the planet's terrestrial species and over 95% its corals. A well-known tropical forest ecosystem to provide significant global regulating services has declined at a rate 5.5 M ha per year from 1990-2015, while another region noted an increase year. There is evidence that disservices are least studied in world. This study quantified peer-review papers tropics, then explored neglected type, service category, assessment mode, applied techniques choice dependence...

Soil compaction due to land management systems has profound implications on soil physical properties with consequent effects productivity. The paper at hand assesses under three different use (cultivated land, grassland and adjacent forest land).Soil samples were collected from the types 0-30 cm depth using core sampler method analyzed determine texture, bulk density porosity. The results showed variations in porosity levels also significant differences (P<.05) texture system depth.Extreme of...

Abstract Accelerated loss of Earth’s wilderness over the last five decades underscores urgency for efforts to retain conservation value these areas. Assessing how areas are likely be impacted by future environmental change is fundamental achieving global biodiversity goals. Using scenarios climate and land-use during baseline (1970–2005) (2015–2050) epochs, we found that within predicted increase ~ 47%, compared a 19% in change. Half (52%) all may undergo 2050, limiting their capacity...

Abstract Subsistence-oriented communities in tropical coastal areas face the greatest threat from climate change, with consequences manifesting through diminishing returns small-scale fishing and farming ventures. The complementary climate, sustainable development, biodiversity conservation policies target reducing risks, but effective policy outcomes depend on a thorough understanding of system-wide risk, community adaptation potential gaps, possible economic losses. Using four countries...

This paper investigates the effectiveness of conservation efforts in Nyungwe Forest National Park (Nyungwe). The forest is one six key landscapes identified for Albertine Rift because it hosts many threatened species. As such, a number different stakeholders have been involved its since 1987; yet, studies that emphasize and evaluate success these are limited. We combined rapid relatively low cost remotely-sensed data Light Use Efficiency model to generate indicators such as NDVI, canopy Net...

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are recognised avenues for implementing internationally agreed commitments on climate change mitigation. However, practical implementation of NbS strategies is impeded by, among other things, a lack understanding the underlying biophysical, social and political contexts NbS. In this paper, we used data potential carbon sink outcomes from eight across 126 developing countries to evaluate how socioeconomic ecological factors may influence uptake, allocation...
