Measurements of transport triglycerides (TG) in very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) were carried out 59 patients by injection radioactive glycerol, determinations specific activities VLDL-TG for 48 h thereafter, and treatment the data multicompartmental analysis. The divided into three groups: normal weight (89-120% ideal weight), mildly obese (120-135% markedly (135% weight). They had varying levels ranging from to elevated. In many subjects, there was a positive correlation between...

The mechanisms for the hypolipidemic action of nicotinic acid were examined in 12 patients with hyperlipidemia. Most studied hospital on a metabolic ward. The first month was control period followed by 1 acid.During treatment acid, triglycerides (TG) decreased total plasma an average 52% and very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) 36%.Transport rates VLDL-TG determined multicompartmental analysis following injection [3H]glycerol as precursor.Nicotinic transport (synthesis) 24

We treated 70 patients with gallstones chenodeoxycholic acid over 3 1/2 years and analyzed the factors influencing outcome of therapy. This treatment was unsuccessful in 11 radiopaque seven nonfunctioning gallbladders, but 64 per cent radiolucent for six months or more showed partial complete gallstone dissolution, those whose bile became unsaturated cholesterol, 100 had evidence dissolution. In mean post-treatment biliary cholesterol saturation index--0.78 +/- 0.04 (S.E.M.)--was...

In this study a technique is described for estimating net absorption of total cholesterol (endogenous + exogenous) that enters the intestine. The method employs intubation patients with 3-lumen tube contains 10-cm mixing segment in duodenum and 100-cm jejunum. A liquid formula diet containing varying amounts exogenous infused continuously into upper period several hours; stimulates constant contraction gallbladder thus provides continous secretion biliary sitosterol as marker, input...

Abstract Background A strong dose-volume relationship exists between the amount of small bowel receiving low- to intermediate-doses radiation and rates acute, severe gastrointestinal toxicity, principally diarrhea. There is considerable interest in application highly conformal treatment approaches, such as intensity-modulated therapy (IMRT), reduce dose adjacent organs-at-risk carcinoma rectum. Therefore, we performed a comprehensive dosimetric evaluation IMRT compared 3-dimensional (3DCRT)...

VANCOMYCIN given by mouth is effective for the treatment of pseudomembranous colitis,1 2 3 4 a disease now known to be caused an exotoxin Clostridium difficile.5 6 7 8 Only one relapse colitis after with vancomycin has been reported.9 This report documents in three patients discontinuation mouth.Case ReportsPertinent clinical data appear Table 1. Pseudomembranous and Cases 1 were documented sigmoidoscopy rectal biopsy, according established criteria.10 The initial episode Case was revealed...

A new kindred with asymptomatic hypobetalipoproteinemia is reported. The proband, age 67, differs from previously described cases in several respects: (a) unusually low levels of density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (4-8 mg/dl); (b) normal triglyceride levels; (c) high lipoprotein; (d) mild fat malabsorption; and (e) a defect chylomicron clearance. On high-carbohydrate diet his plasma levels, instead rising, actually fell. Turnover triglycerides very lipoproteins (VLDL) was (2.8 mg/kg per...

Hepatic outputs of biliary lipids can be measured by intestinal perfusion techniques, either during constant infusion liquid formula into the duodenum or through-out a 24-hour period which time three meals are given along with an overnight fast. The purpose this study was to compare these two methods for estimating secretion lipids. In 21 subjects, mean hourly continuous feeding were highly comparable those intermittent feeding, showing that technique gave valid estimations overall daily...

Although, in suitable patients, oral chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) dissolves gallstones, the results of recent animal studies suggest that it might be hepatotoxic. Liver function was therefore studied patients with gallstones before and during treatment CDCA liver biopsies were carried out both cholelithiasis given bile therapy those who had been no medical treatment. In 25 treated 0·5-1·5 g CDCA/day (7-20 mg kg body weight−1 day−1) there significant change serum...

Coding region mutations in the principal basolateral iron transporter of duodenal enterocyte, ferroportin 1 (FPN1), lead to autosomal dominant reticuloendothelial overload humans. We report positional cloning a hypermorphic, regulatory mutation Fpn1 from radiation-induced polycythaemia (Pcm) mice. A 58 bp microdeletion Fpn1promoter alters transcription start sites and eliminates responsive element (IRE) 5′ untranslated region, resulting increased hepatic protein levels during early postnatal...

We investigated the natural history of cholelithiasis in 59 samples stones from gallbladder or common bile duct 15 patients, using as a tracer for timing stone formation 14C released into environment during nuclear weapons testing. The ages were correlated with dates onset symptoms and other clinical data. None 11 symptomatic patients had complications until at least two years (mean +/- SD, 8.0 5.1 years) after began. In patients with cholesterol gallstones, there is a diminished bile acid pool and the becomes supersaturated cholesterol. Medical treatment has been aimed at re-expanding to improve solubility in but as yet factors controlling size of pool9 are unknown. Therefore role liver intestine rat was studied effect experimental expansion on metabolism lipid composition examined. Bile absorption increased from ileum made hyperplastic by previous jejunectomy hepatic synthesis phenobarbitone treatment....
