Abstract Recent work on the drag experienced by an entrained particle in relative motion through a fluid is reviewed. It shown that turbulence, acceleration, shape and orientation, particle‐fluid mass transfer can all have significant effect value of force, particularly when non‐idealities cause change flow pattern around particle. Conditions under which force be predicted with certainty are still very limited, some potentially valuable directions for future research suggested.
Activated carbons have excellent performance in a number of process applications. In particular, they appear to the most favourable characteristics for adsorption processes, thanks their high porosity and large surface area. However, comprehensive assessment environmental impacts manufacturing chain is still lacking. This study evaluates these taking specific case activated carbon produced from coconut shells Indonesia, which major producer county. Coconut as raw materials are utilized...
Effects of land use changes are starting to be included in estimates life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, so-called carbon footprints (CFs), from food production. Their omission can lead serious underestimates, particularly for meat. Here we estimate emissions the conversion forest pasture Legal Amazon Region (LAR) Brazil and present a model distribute deforestation over products time subsequent change. Expansion cattle ranching beef production is major cause LAR. The footprint...
The Planetary Boundaries (PB) framework represents a significant advance in specifying the ecological constraints on human development. However, to enable decision-makers business and public policy respect these strategic planning, PB needs be developed generate practical tools. With this objective mind, we analyse recent literature highlight three major scientific technical challenges operationalizing approach decision-making: first, identification of thresholds or boundaries with...
The earlier in the development of a process design change is made, lower cost and higher impact on final performance. This applies equally to environmental technical performance, but practice aspects often receive less attention. To maximise sustainability, it important review all these through each stage, not just after design. Tools that integrate goals into would enable more environmentally friendly processes at cost. paper brings together approaches based Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)...
