Refined baseline inventories of non-indigenous species (NIS) are set per European Union Member State (MS), in the context Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The based on initial assessment MSFD (2012) and updated data Alien Species Information Network, collaboration with NIS experts appointed by MSs. analysis revealed that a large number was not reported from assessments. Moreover, several initially listed currently considered as native Europe or were proven to be historical...
This study describes sedimentation associated with the tsunami generated by Lisbon earthquake of ad 1755. It is argued here that deposited a sand sheet across Lagoa dos Salgados (central Algarve, Portugal), intercalated late-Holocene estuarine/lagoonal sediments. A wide range proxies (sedimentological, exoscopic and palaeontological) are used to establish provenance sandy material as well constrain age deposit. Stratigraphic criteria distinguish uniqueness event layer. Exoscopic textural...
Foamed trays were produced by injection moulding using starch and primary sludge as sustainable raw materials. The foamed are characterized low density, high porosity, significant water uptake, a hydrophobic surface.
Abstract A 5.4 m long sediment core was collected from Belbín, a karstic depression dammed by moraine in mid‐altitude environment the Western Massif of Picos de Europa Cantabrian Mountains, northern Spain. 14 C AMS dating basal sediments suggests that maximum glacier advance during last glacial cycle preceded global Last Glacial Maximum and occurred prior to 37.2 ka cal BP. Four environmental stages are reconstructed analysis particular surface microstructures on quartz sand grains: (1)...
Abstract. The distribution of Recent and Holocene Cyprideis torosa (Jones, 1850) from brackish estuaries lagoons mainland Portugal is presented; older Cenozoic C. are also briefly mentioned. Around 550 specimens were found alive, in Melides lagoon (456) salt marshes large (90). Thousands empty valves carapaces, with different ornamentation, the lagoon, samples boreholes, latter higher concentration sediments deposited lagoons....
The chronological framework for Neanderthal occupation and demise across Europe continues to be debated. In particular, there is still uncertainty regarding the nature, timing regional expressions of Middle Upper Palaeolithic transition associated with disappearance Neanderthals broader expansion modern human populations in around 42–40 thousand years ago (ka). geographical distribution also remains difficult evaluate owing practical challenges directly dating fossils at many sites, fact...
We examine the Holocene environmental changes in a wet dune slack of Portuguese coast, Poço do Barbarroxa de Baixo. Lithology, organic matter, biological proxies and high-resolution chronology provide estimations sediment accumulation rates conditions relation to sea-level change climate variability during Holocene. Results show that was formed 7.5 cal. ka BP, contemporaneous with last stages rapid rise. This depositional environment under frequent freshwater flooding water ponding allowed...
In this work we present preliminary results of the study one sediment core (EDP1), collected near Cais do Sodré, Lisbon downtown, close to day Tagus riverfront. The allowed differentiation 4 major units that a signature increasing anthropic influence over time. lowermost unit (Unit 1) corresponds subtidal flat accreting in low energy and brackish conditions. This sedimentation pattern is interrupted by high-energy deposition Unit 2, characterized higher density diversity foraminiferal...
Salt marshes are highly valued coastal environments for different services: coastline protection, biodiversity, and blue carbon. They vulnerable to climate changes, particularly sea-level rise. For this reason, it is essential project the evolution of marsh areas until end century. This work presents a reduced complexity model quantify salt marshes’ in rise (SLR) context through combining field remote sensing data: SMRM (Simplified Marsh Response Model). two-dimensional rule-based that...
The acquisition of a formal postgraduate education, such as Master's or Doctoral degree, is significant importance for students aiming to deepen their knowledge and contribute respective fields. However, the difficulties associated with incorporating real-world field activities into education can be substantial limitation. For example, this deficiency may impede development practical skills, hinder ability cope challenges, limit understanding how theoretical concepts manifest themselves in...
