This paper examines the impact of China's High-Speed-Railway on internal migration. By exploiting yearly variation in city-pair connection, difference-in-differences estimation shows that HSR connection significantly promotes intercity Furthermore, large cities have a huge siphon effect small terms immigration after connection.
The vast increase in China's aid projects has raised mounting concerns about the effectiveness of Chinese aid. To assess development assistance Africa from perspective local residents' attitude toward projects, we geographically match 2000 to 2012 respondents Afrobarometer survey. By comparing attitudes China reported by individuals who live close ongoing at time interview those near sites where will be implemented future, this study establishes that presence induces a positive view within...
One of the advantages e-retailers is their capability to provide a large amount information consumers. However, when exceeds consumers' processing capacities, it will lead worse decision quality and experience, causing overload effect. In this study, event-related potentials (ERPs) were applied examine hidden neural mechanism impact on processes. Behavioral data showed that people would spend more time making decisions faced with overload. Neurophysiologically, consumers invest less...
The fast growth and unique model of Chinese aid provide new perspectives empirical evidence for the study effectiveness. This paper employs GIS technology to match projects in Africa with satellite-measured nighttime lights – a proxy economic development converts them into 0.5° (longitude) x (latitude) panel data. First, we find that are positively correlated Africa’s development. Second, gain deep understanding mechanisms aid-growth relationship is mostly attributed infrastructure rather...
The efficacy of foreign aid, especially escalating Chinese has been controversial. Considering the widespread malnutrition in Sub-Saharan Africa and substantial concerns about we investigate whether how development assistance improves nutrition African recipients, particularly children women. We match aid projects Demographic Health Surveys (DHS) covering 24 SSA countries during 2000–2016. address causality by comparing individuals who lived near a project that was effective at time...
School bullying is a serious problem in academic settings all over the world. Using data from Ghana through Trends International Mathematics and Science Study we show that has negative effect on performance. We also find evidence female students are more affected by bullying. However, our analysis of reveals teacher classroom diminishes students. The uses quasi-experimental propensity score matching OLS methods followed series robustness tests validates unconfoundedness overlapping...
Exploiting data from Ghanaian schools' eighth grade students collected in 2011, we estimate the causal effects of school bullying on academic achievement and gender-based mitigating approaches by using propensity score matching (PSM) doubly robust (DR) estimator approach. We find that victimized at least 0.22 standard deviation lower than their peers a standardized mathematics examination. Meanwhile, document effect is significantly attenuated presence female teachers classroom. These...
This article studies the effects of Chinese aid on economic development in Africa. We geographically match Africa to satellite nightlight and other variables. Using a grid-cell panel dataset, we find that aid, particularly infrastructure projects, has significant robust positive impacts Mechanism analysis suggests substantially reduces violent rebel activities growth population industries. The heterogeneous demonstrates projects foster not via resource exploitation.
We present a plausible causal analysis of the impact playing after school on academic performance and investigate parental support as potential channel. exploit data from 2011 Trends in International Mathematics Science Survey to evaluate effects by using propensity score matching approach. The results show that increases math science scores fourth grade students. find White students benefit school, but non-White do not. Furthermore, we evidence enhances school.
Charity corruption scandals cause sharp declines in donations. When deciding about charitable contributions, donors are influenced by the actual share that ultimately goes to intended recipients; however, they also impacted potential veiled cost may come from legitimate administration and advertisement costs or some cases unethical expenditures corruption. Therefore, confronted with a tradeoff between helping people need possibility of being cheated. Individuals justify not giving using...
The rapid development and diffusion of new technologies such as automation artificial intelligence makes life more convenient. At the same time, people may develop overdependence on technology to simplify everyday tasks or reduce level effort required accomplish them. We conduct a two-phase real-effort laboratory experiment assess how external assistance affects subsequent revealed preferences for convenience lower versus monetary rewards requiring greater effort. results suggest that men...
Color, as one of the most critical visual factors influencing consumer decisions, has been widely used in e-commerce marketing. However, effects product-background saturation combination on consumers' willingness to purchase products with different heaviness attributes (e.g., heaviness-positive or heaviness-negative products) have not conclusively determined. The current study demonstrated product perception and its downstream consequences. Based behavioral method, 1 showed that a patch...

Abstract This study explored the impact of transportation systems in urban areas on economic activity. We examined effect traditional Chinese railway construction fencing spatial development using nighttime luminance and data from prefecture‐level cities. The found that exacerbated uneven either side railway, especially economically underdeveloped areas. These results were supported by different measures a placebo test. was also to affect location newly registered firms total factor...
Contrary to the common view that more information is always better, too much can damage decision quality. Building on existing literature, this study identified regulatory focus as a critical factor influencing effect of load (IL) online consumer decisions and used event-related potentials (ERPs) uncover its underlying neural mechanism. Behavioral data showed promotion-focused participants would spend less time making purchasing in low IL condition than high condition. However, no...
Stream networks are the transportation channels of pollutants that can significantly influence water environment risk (WER). However, influences stream network structure and connectivity (SC) on WER at national scale its regional variability have been rarely investigated in China. In this study, was assessed from grey footprint nitrogen phosphorus 214 catchments The relationship between SC were analyzed using correlation relational analysis. Results showed index (RI) some located Hai Liao...
