We present estimates of length-weight relationships (LWRs) 55 mesopelagic fish species 13 taxonomic families based on data collected in the eastern tropical North Atlantic (ETNA) March/April 2015. Our include novel records for 19 species, while 25 LWRs are most robust sample sizes, and 21 they representative size ranges available up to now. In 31 body lengths were within maximum range recorded area, with new species. Most values b fell between 2.5 3.5 a mean exponent 3.08 (median 3.12)...

The deep sea is among the largest, most biologically diverse, yet least-explored ecosystems on Earth. Baseline information deep-sea biodiversity crucial for understanding ecosystem functioning and detecting community changes. Here, we established a baseline of cephalopod composition distribution off Cabo Verde, an archipelago in eastern tropical Atlantic. This served to test hypothesis that Verde biogeographically separated from other Macaronesian archipelagos allowed identification species...

Size-based criteria [length frequency distributions (LFDs), size ranges, class structure and biomass spectra] were applied to investigate changes between mesopelagic historical (HA, 1966–1979) present fish assemblages (PA, 2014–2015) on the basis of a total 35 566 length measurements. Under-sampling, collection bias, time-averaging, environmental change considered as sources uncertainty. In PA comparisons, size-based allowed for distinction seasonal (spring vs. summer) (oxygen minimum zone...

Abstract Vertical distribution patterns and relative abundance of mesopelagic fish species other major taxonomic groups were investigated through vertically stratified trawl sampling hydroacoustic analyses along the subtropical convergence zone from 52° W to 70° in oligotrophic Sargasso Sea. Persistent stationary layers several migrating components different scattering characteristics detected. The results reveal varying vertical migration patterns, including times onset diel depths a...

Abstract An investigation of the distribution and general biology (size, maturation fecundity) sepiolid Sepietta oweniana off Portuguese Coast is presented based on 594 specimens collected during research cruises between 1997 2008. Statolith microstructure was examined in 35 animals. S. mainly encountered southwestern southern continental slopes, while it rare north 38°N. Female mantle length (ML) ranged from 13.9 to 35.7 mm, male ML 12.5 28.0 mm; both sexes being significantly larger...

Abstract The present study investigated the distribution and general reproductive biology (size, maturation, fecundity) of bobtail squid Rondeletiola minor from Portuguese Atlantic Coast, based on 387 specimens collected between 1997 2009, which 240 were fully analysed. species was mainly encountered southern shelf Algarve, in depths 175–375 m. Females had mantle lengths (ML) 10.9–21.2 mm mature 13.4 mm, while ML males ranged 10.4 to 18.9 with smallest specimen being long. potential...
