During the last years, several reports described an apoptosis-like programmed cell death process in yeast response to different environmental aggressions. Here, evidence is presented that hyperosmotic stress caused by high glucose or sorbitol concentrations culture medium induces Saccharomyces cerevisiae a accompanied morphological and biochemical indicators of apoptotic death, namely chromatin condensation along nuclear envelope, mitochondrial swelling reduction cristae number, production...

The killer toxin from Pichia membranifaciens CYC 1106, a yeast isolated fermenting olive brines, binds primarily to the (1-->6)-beta-D-glucan of cell wall sensitive (Candida boidinii IGC 3430). was purified walls C. by alkali and hot-acetic acid extraction, procedure which solubilizes glucans. major fraction receptor activity remained with alkali-insoluble (1-->6)-beta- (1-->3)-beta-D-glucans. chemical (gas-liquid chromatography) structural (periodate oxidation, infrared spectroscopy, (1)H...

Yeasts were isolated from spontaneous fermentations of olives in brines. Ascomycetous species dominated the yeast flora (>90%) and among them Pichia membranae‐faciens related species. Some components tested as substrates for growth. Killer activity was observed approximately half isolates, wider spectra displayed by strains anomala.

The killer properties of yeasts isolated from olive brines were examined in the absence and presence sodium chloride concentrations up to 6% (wt/vol). An apparent enhancement killing action as salt concentration increased, well changes spectra activity against selected target strains, was observed a few strains. Culture filtrates strains grown at different NaCl (0, 3, or [wt/vol]) tested sensitive cultivated under same conditions. While sensitivity strain greatly increased salt, no...

Aims: In this work the microflora present in kefir, a fermented milk product, was studied together with effect of kefir administration on different groups indigenous bacteria mouse bowel. Methods and Results: Kefir composed lactic acid bacteria, acetic yeasts. Yeast population Saccharomyces cerevisiae, S. unisporus, Candida Kluyveromyces marxianus K. lactis. The streptococci levels treated mice increased by 10-fold sulfite-reducing clostridia decreased 100-fold. number significantly....

The transport of maltose in Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been generally accepted as a H+-sugar symport, with stoichiometrical ratio 1:1. A simultaneous exit K+ from the cells initial uptake reported previously. By using K+-selective electrode and radioactive maltose, we were able to measure 1 mol K+/mol taken up by first 10-15 s. This is pH-independent. So, protons non-buffered cell suspension or buffered one can be used rates uptake. We have pH study effect external respectively on kinetic...

Seven yeasts strains have been isolated from sewage sludge. Also six samples of compost with different sieving, composting times and origins, analysed. Apparently, processes negatively affect the viability yeasts, as none could be samples. The margins tolerance to Cd, Cu Zn determined. physiological response metals was similar in all species studied, general, kinetic parameters (mu lag) were affected. Metal uptake ability also studied inter- intra-specific heterogeneity detected, thus...

We propose a model, based on the Gompertz equation, to describe growth of yeasts colonies agar medium. This model presents several advantages: (i) one equation describes colony growth, which previously needed two separate ones (linear increase radius and squared radius); (ii) similar can be applied total viable cells, area or radius, because number cells in mature is proportional their area; (iii) its parameters estimate cell yield, concentration that triggers limitation effect this specific...

In this work we analyze the spoiling potential of Meyerozyma guilliermondii in yogurt. The analysis was based on contaminated samples sent to us by an industrial laboratory over two years. All plain and fruit yogurt packages were heavily yeasts, but only last ones, containing fermentable sugars besides lactose, spoiled gas swelling. These strains unable grow ferment lactose (as type strain); they did lactate plus galactose, fermented glucose sucrose, galactose (weakly), not compete with...
