Perfect single grains of the AlPdMn icosahedral phase have been used for structure determination by X-ray and neutron diffraction. Owing to large difference between scattering factors, information is gained on atomic positions three elements. A model proposed as deduced from a six-dimensional (6D) Patterson analysis. Six different hypersurfaces are located node body-centre sites 6D lattice. The superstructure that leads face-centred lattice mainly due strong chemical ordering, all palladium...

Abstract The occurrence of a reversible phase transformation from rhombohedral crystalline structure to perfect quasicrystalline state chemical composition Al63·5Fe12·5Cu24 has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. Both direct in situ heating experiments and thermal treatments bulk dodecahedral particles have carried out order characterize the various intermediate stages this its reversibility. most spectacular can be considered as modulated which, depending on treatment, appears...

Using both powder and single crystal samples, neutron X-ray diffraction data were obtained with quasicrystals of the AlLiCu system. Isotopic substitution on Li Cu atomic sites allowed amplitudes phase shift partial structure factors to be determined. a high-dimensional crystallography approach results in phases reconstructed densities calculated. The six-dimensional periodic appeared as primitive hypercubic lattice mid-edge vertex Al/Cu surfaces plus bodycentre site. major drawbacks...

Quasicrystals uncovered in aluminium alloys are still a matter of intense research regarding their structure which does not obey the rules classical crystallography. Today, they also offer new challenge relation with specific electronic properties and surprising mechanical behaviour. These summarized this review light some structural data. The technological relevance these results is briefly advocated.

We present high-resolution electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction studies of the Al63Cu17.5Co17.5Si2 alloy at room temperature. The sample is found periodic in one direction c presents tenfold symmetry l = 0 plane perpendicular to this direction. two complementary techniques show that not a 2D quasi-crystalline state but microcrystalline state, which restores overall pattern. On basis our results, we discuss some relationships could exist between phases.

Abstract For years, the community working on quasicrystals in many countries world was expecting ultimate recognition of its contribution to advancement crystal chemistry, solid‐state physics, mathematics, and other fields. Nearly thirty years after initial discovery, it finally awarded October 2011 Prof. Danny Shechtman by Nobel Committee for Physics Chemistry. Many, most often independent, achievements contributed this success. The purpose article is chronicle role played applications...

We have investigated the structure of ${\mathrm{Al}}_{13}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}(010)$ surface using both experimental and ab initio computational methods. The results indicate that topmost layers correspond to incomplete puckered ($P$) planes present in bulk crystal structure. main building block corrugated termination consists two adjacent pentagons Al atoms, each centered by a protruding Fe atom. These motifs are interconnected via additional atoms referred as ``glue'' which partially desorb...
