We present the first global assessment of extinction risk for a major group freshwater invertebrates, caridean shrimps. The all 763 species was assessed using IUCN Red List criteria that include geographic ranges, habitats, ecology and past threats. Indo-Malayan region holds over half diversity, with peak in Indo-China southern China. Shrimps primarily inhabit flowing water; however, significant subterranean component is present, which more threatened than surface fauna. Two are extinct...
A new freshwater crab is described from the montane area in northeastern Taiwan based on morphological and molecular evidence. Geothelphusa boreas sp. nov., Fushan Botanical Garden situated around New Taipei City Yilan County, distinct similar congeners by structure of male first gonopod proportions thoracic sternites. In addition, after comparing holotypes G. takuan hirsuta Tan Liu, 1998, no substantial difference could be found. Molecular evidence mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I...
A new freshwater crab is described from a montane area in northern Taiwan based on morphological characters and molecular evidence. Geothelphusa cilan sp. nov., the Cilan Forest, situated boundary of Hsinchu Yilan (= Ilan) counties, close to G. monticola Shy, Ng & Yu, 1994, takuan but can be distinguished by its male first gonopod (G1) ratio thoracic sternites. Molecular evidence mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) also supports identity species.
We investigated four morphologically affiliated species of Macrobrachium in northeastern Asia (M. nipponense and M. formosense, which spawn many small eggs, shokitai asperulum, a few large eggs). Multi-locus allozyme analysis supported the hypothesis that shokitai, endemic to southernmost island (Iriomote Island) Ryukyus, Japan, differentiated recently (approximately 1.0 Myr ago) from nearby asperulum populations Taiwan. formosense are inferred have later (0.48 ago). The group was presumed...
The phyllosoma larvae of the slipper lobster Eduarctus martensii (Pfeffer, 1881) were first time successfully hatched in laboratory and reared to Stage VI. It took 24 days for newly reach We also confirmed identities wild-caught phyllosomas this species by DNA barcoding mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene (sequence similarities 98.8%–99.8%), including two late-stage individuals that developed into a nisto an early juvenile. diagnoses all nine stages, nisto, juvenile are provided, with number rows...
The fiddler crab, Austruca lactea inhabits tidal flat areas and is widely distributed across Japan, the Korean Peninsula, China, Taiwan northern Vietnam. Fiddler crab habitat being lost rapidly due to human impacts this species currently listed as endangered in Japan. We studied population genetic structure of A. using mitochondrial DNA control region markers define management units. individuals were sampled from Osaka, Hiroshima Kumamoto Taichung Penghu Islands Taiwan. All local samples...
Abstract Genetic diversity and population structure in the fiddler crab Austruca perplexa were investigated to acquire a better understanding of evolutionary history species. Nucleotide sequence analysis was performed from polymerase chain reaction-amplified fragment mitochondrial DNA control region. A 691 bp nucleotide obtained 618 specimens collected 13 sites across Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia Australia. Haplotype ranged 0.8 0.99, values lower (range, 0.30–1.9%) than those...
Abstract The larvae of the edible mud shrimp Upogebia edulis were successfully reared in laboratory for first time. freshly laid eggs orange colour and 1.08 mm x 1.00 average size. diameter eyed was between 1.17 1.13 1.36 1.21 just before hatching. Under conditions at a water temperature 23-26°C salinity 33-34 ppt, newly hatched planktonic zoeae (average carapace length 0.90 mm) already with biramous pleopods. quickly moulted into zoea II next day 0.95 mm. On third day, metamorphosed...
A new species of potamid freshwater crab, Geothelphusa makatao, is described from southwestern Taiwan, based on morphological characters and mitochondrial DNA evidence. The differs close congeners, G. pingtung Tan & Liu, 1998, shernshan Chen, Cheng Shy, 2005, ancylophallus Ng Yu, 1994 a superficially similar species, albogilva 1994, in the structure its ambulatory legs, thoracic sternum, male abdomen, first pleopods. unique gene sequences 16S rRNA cytochrome oxidase I also support...

The larvae of the endemic, Taiwanese atyid shrimp, Caridina formosae, were reared in laboratory. species has large eggs and its larval development is complete suppression type. morphology various stages described illustrated detail. Des larves de la crevette atyide endemique Taiwan formosae ont ete elevees en laboratoire. Cette espece a grands oeufs et son developpement larvaire est type complete. La morphologie des differents stades larvaires decrite illustree
Abstract Two new species of potamid freshwater crabs the genus Geothelphusa are described from Ryukyu Islands in southern Japan. Although both G. shokitai sp. nov. and minei allied to candidiensis (type locality Taiwan), they differ that each other form their carapaces, ambulatory leg proportions, structure male first pleopods.
A new species of semi-terrestrial sesarmid crab the genus
Two new species of bitterling Paratanakia were found and collected from Taiwan island Fujian Province, mainland China recently. fuvlidorsalis n. sp. which is endemic in can be well distinguished other congeners by the following unique combination features: (1) fin ray counts: dorsal rays 3, 8; anal 10; pectoral modally 1, 12; (2) squamtion: lateral-line scales 34; (3) its own specific color pattern male. julongjiangensis 9; 11; The brief morphological comparison with close related would also...
The major morphological characters are as follow: Z-1: Carapace length (CL)=0.37 mm; sessile eyes; 3 aesthetascs in front of Antennule; Anterior the first and second Maxilliped exopod both with 4 plumose setae. Z-2: CL=0.48 eyes stalked; there 6 increased into Z-3: CL=0.56 lateral spine becomes short. all 8 Z-4: CL=0.68 Antennule become 8; two pairs 10
Miyake & Sakai (1967) described a new species of axiid shrimp, Calocaris (Calastacus) amakusana, from single female specimen lacking major cheliped. Later, de Saint Laurent, 1989 transferred this to their genus Acanthaxius. However, (2011) recently established monotypic Amakusaxius accommodate Acanthaxius amakusana. Since the original description no additional rare has been reported and consequently an appraisal A. amakusanus (Miyake Sakai, 1967) not possible. Now six specimens including...
The giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium spinipes (Schenkel, 1902) is recorded from Taiwan for the first time and extends distribution of species to north Tropic Cancer. Taiwanese specimens differ slightly material Indonesian Papua in density spination adult second pereipods, relative length ridge posterior submedian plate thoracite sternite 4, color carapace, abdomen pleural condyles.
Palaemon serrifer is a small shrimp and belonging to family Palaemonidae. The species distributes in west India, Burma, Java, Hong Kong, Taiwan Japan. habitats of P. are reef coasts, rocky coasts breakwater regions, sometimes can be found aquaculture ponds. In this experiment, adult shrimps were obtained from pond National Penghu Institute Technology. Under the temperature 25-2T℃, salinity 33-35‰, larvae went through five zoeal stages metamorphosed into postlarval stage 14th day after hatching.
Three species of crabs new to Penghu County, Taiwan are reported. Nanhaipotamon formosanum (Parisi, 1916) was found on the bank a river in Husi Village and is first report true freshwater crab from Penghu. In same locality, Eriocheir japonica De Haan, 1835 lives which implies may have played role as stepping stone for this during dispersal between China. Specimens Uca coarctata (H. Milne Edwards, 1852) were also collected mudflats Magong City Citou, finding shows fauna main island same.
