Since 2005, the Brazilian Ornithological Records Committee (CBRO) has published updated checklists of birds almost every year. Herein, we present a completely new and annotated version our checklist. For first time, list all bird subspecies known from Brazil that are currently accepted by at least one key ornithological reference work. The inclusion should be seen as synthesis, not taxonomic endorsement. As such, include in checklist 1919 avian species, 910 which treated polytypic works...
Responding to purported taxonomic anarchy, in an article published the widely read journal Nature, Garnett & Christidis (2017) [hereafter GC] opined on need for “standardized global species lists”, at behest of conservationists, and proposed construction a judicial committee “restrict … freedom action” promote stability. Here we reflect this perspective contest that view GC conflicts with some basic indisputable principles underpinning philosophy science, most notably: it must be free....
The question whether taxonomic descriptions naming new animal species without type specimen(s) deposited in collections should be accepted for publication by scientific journals and allowed the Code has already been discussed Zootaxa (Dubois & Nemésio 2007; Donegan 2008, 2009; 2009a-b; Dubois Gentile Snell Minelli Cianferoni Bartolozzi 2016; Amorim et al. 2016). This was again raised a letter supported 35 signatories published journal Nature (Pape 2016) on 15 September 2016. On 25 2016,...
The Saffron-billed Sparrow (Arremon flavirostris) complex occurs in the undergrowth of deciduous woodlands and forests from Andes Bolivia northern Argentina to Paraguay southern, mid-western interior eastern Brazil. Currently four subspecies are recognized: A. f. flavirostris, polionotus, devillii dorbignii. We review taxonomy this by analyzing coloration morphometrics a series 234 skins, comparing 101 sound recordings. Our results suggest that under both Phylogenetic Biological Species...
The breeding grounds of the Black-billed Cuckoo Coccyzus erythropthalmus encompass a wide area in northern North America. During austral winter individuals migrate to non-breeding areas South There had been only three known locations for species Brazil, two Amazon Forest and one Atlantic Forest. Here, we aim present new records Brazil organize available literature recovering historical data. are Southeast regions thus represent first documented outside Brazilian Amazon. These findings...
We report on a collection of birds made at study site in Presidente Kennedy, midway between the Araguaia and Tocantins Rivers, north-central state, Brazil. Interesting records are presented for 22 species, most them principally Amazonian taxa with comparatively few previous state Tocantins, generally amplifying their local ranges either further south, from north or east, banks River. Among them, we first specimen hybrids/intermediaries Pyrrhura parakeets "P. perlata-coerulescens" complex...
The White-crowned Manakin Pipra pipra was long considered congeneric with other members of the genus Pipra, until Prum (1990, 1992, 1994) demonstrated that its display repertoire and syringeal morphology differ considerably from all genus. Subsequently, three different molecular phylogenies have indicated this manakin is more closely related to Machaeropterus than Pipra. (1992) name Dixiphia Reichenbach, 1850, available, thus combination has since been in widespread use for species. However,...
The White-chinned Swift Cypseloides cryptus is perhaps one of the rarest swift species in New World, and many aspects its life history are poorly known. Here we report some new information on diet reproductive behavior a breeding population C. at Asframa Falls, Rio Preto da Eva, Amazonas, Brazil. During four surveys site (March August 2012, July 2013), six active small cup-shaped nests were found described. Measurements plumage five collected adults two chicks also provided. Stomach contents...
We inspected feather mites (Acariformes: Astigmata) associated with the brown noddy, Anous stolidus (Linnaeus), for first time in Southern hemisphere. Three are herein reported, including two new species: Alloptes (Sternalloptes) hidasii sp. nov. (Analgoidea: Alloptidae), Analloptes tintinnabulus Xolalgidae), and Grenieria bicaudata Dabert Atyeo, 1997 (Pterolichoidea: Syringobiidae). The latter species was originally described from a different subspecies of this host Hawaii.

Following the publication of Kirwan et al. (2016), it has been brought to our attention that treatment any possible alternative genus-group name for Parus pipra Linnaeus, 1758, when treated as monotypic, was not self-evident others authors. As there is no "case law" in Zoological Nomenclature, and whatever conclusions we reached were naturally subject interpretation Code (ICZN 1999), may necessarily accord with views others, have revisited "Pythis Viell.: Pipra leucocilla Gm." Boie (1826:...
