The superficial ulnar artery is a rare variation of the upper limb arterial system that arises from brachial or axillary and runs to muscles arising medial epicondyle [1–3]. incidence about 0.7 7% [1, 4, 5]. In our routine dissections we found artery, which crossed cubital fossa bicipital aponeurosis making it highly vulnerable intra-arterial injection. This every medical nursing staff member should know about.
CORRECTION: The spelling of the second author's name was changed from PC Chandrasinge to Chandrasinghe on 22/04/2013.Introduction Sri Lanka is endemic for goiters. Iodine deficiency thought be main cause. global iodisation programme implemented in country 1995. Several studies done school children have shown a reduction goiter prevalence (3.8%) initial post period. An island wide, community based study carried out Methods A multistage cluster sampling method used. Examination goiters by two...
The tubercle of Zuckerkandl (ZT) is an embryological remnant the thyroid gland. Its close relationship to recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) makes it important surgical landmark. Presence and size ZT was prospectively assessed during thyroidectomies done at a single unit 2013. Eighty patients were included in study. Closest distance RLN measured. Median age 48 years (range 20-75 years). present 72 (90%) least on one side 55 (69%) both sides. Grade III tubercles found 17 (21.25%) patients....
Background Total thyroidectomy is increasingly recognised as the preferred surgical option for benign diseases of thyroid. One factor contributing towards this change in policy reports incidental carcinomas resected specimens. Methods This was a prospective study patients, who underwent total thyroid at University Surgical Unit, Colombo North Teaching Hospital from January 2003 to December 2005. Results There were 68 patients (67 females) aged 28 67 years (mean 44.2 (SD=11.1). In 6 (8.8%)...

Previous studies of goitre in Sri Lanka proposed the presence a belt, which was refuted subsequently. Epidemiology post iodization era needs re-evaluation. Objectives To describe epidemiology Lanka.A descriptive cross-sectional study conducted designated zones except conflict areas 2006/2007. An interviewer administered questionnaire used and patients were evaluated clinically, biochemically cytologically.Among 5200 participans 426 had goitre. Mean age 36.3 (SD 17.3) years. Goitre commonest...
ABSTRACT Thyroid gland has three main embryological remnants: pyramidal lobe, tubercle of Zuckerkandl and thyrothymic remnants. They are commonly missed or misidentified during dissection. Each these remnants plays a critical role in thyroidectomy as they help to identify the relevant anatomy therefore prevent accidental damage other structures close proximity In this article, we describe current knowledge each their significance thyroidectomy. Conclusion It is important that all objectively...
ABSTRACT Introduction Total thyroidectomy is considered as the standard surgical procedure for most malignancies and benign disease involving both lobes of thyroid gland. Postoperative complications are likely to be commoner when gland large in size due alteration structural anatomy. Methods 102 patients who underwent total disease, by same surgeon, were analyzed. Patients prospectively followed up presence hoarseness hypocalcemia, transient temporary, compared with weight Results Fourteen...

ABSTRACT Background Sri Lanka is considered an endemic region for goiter. Early researchers have suggested the existence of a goiter belt based on rainfall pattern. Subsequent studies done in school children challenged this theory. Current study community-based cross-sectional to assess epidemiology goiters. Geographic information system (GIS) mapping prevalence developed first time Lanka. Methods Study subjects were selected using multi-staged cluster sampling with probability proportionate...
Transligamentous variant of the recurrent motor branch is having a higher risk getting damage during both endoscopic and open carpal tunnel releases. The incidence transligamentous about 7% to 80% world wide. This wide variation could be due failure identification distal edge flexor retinaculum from obliquely oriented fascia that runs edge.We used two criteria identify edge; abrupt change in thickness its colour cross section. The rare reported high an error as shown by Kosin (1998).
ABSTRACT Introduction Thyroidectomy is the commonest endocrine surgical procedure undertaken throughout world. Redo thyroidectomies are challenging procedures with a higher morbidity rate. Lateral approach to thyroid (LATT) good alternative standard midline exploration. The key technique development of natural tissue plane between strap muscle and ipsilateral sternocleidomastoid explore bed. A study was carried out assess efficacy, safety, complication LATT. A recurrent goiter is the regrowth of thyroid tissue after thyroidectomy. The causes recurrence following surgery for benign disease can be broadly attributed to inadequate surgery, embryological remnants left behind inadvertently, and development a malignancy in remnant.Recurrence should preventable.Subtotal thyroidectomy (STT) was main operation goiters until 1980s.The issue with subtotal recurrence. One primary reasons why STT fails fact that does not treat underlying generalized...
