Microgreens are gaining interest for claimed high nutraceutical properties, but data on their chemical composition so far limited. Although often grown hydroponically, mineral requirements still unknown. This study aimed to provide an insight into yield, uptake, and quality of basil, Swiss chard, rocket microgreens in a hydroponic system. With reference reported literature the same species hydroponically harvested at adult stage, these yielded about half, with lower dry matter percentage,...

Wild plants may play an important role in human nutrition and health and, among them, many are the leafy species. We hypothesized that wild greens could be profitably grown as microgreens baby greens, specialty products whose market is increasing. compared three species (Sanguisorba minor Scop., Sinapis arvensis L., Taraxacum officinale Weber ex F. H. Wigg.) harvested at microgreen green stages. Seedlings were hydroponically a half-strength Hoagland nutrient solution under controlled...

In recent years digital sensors have been successfully integrated on board Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) to assess crop vigour, vegetation coverage, and quantify the 'greenness' of foliage as indirect measurements nitrogen status. The classical approach precision agriculture has involved use multispectral onboard UAV development numerous indices associated with parameters, such mostly used Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). However, main negative issue when dealing multi...

This study evaluates the use of biochar as a sustainable substitute to peat in soilless cultivation rocket salad (Eruca vesicaria (L.) Cav.). Biochar was added peat-based substrate at concentrations 0% (control), 5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, and 70% v/v assess its effects on seed germination, plant growth, mineral content, nitrate accumulation. The results show that up 40% maintained germination rates above 80%, similar control, while higher (70% v/v) drastically reduced 29% entirely compromised...

The paper proposes a methodology to assess water consumption in urban agriculture. Green and blue footprints were calculated for five selected community gardens (CGs) Rome (Italy) based on weather, crops, yields. Then, the requirement all CGs of city, identified by means geodatabase, was estimated. For cultivated area 4.06 ha, an overall 22,036 m3 (13,596 green 8,440 blue) resulted from assessment. Considering also efficiency irrigation system, would reach 20,000 worst scenario (furrow irrigation).

Vegetables grown in a floating system may encounter problems of hypoxia at root level, especially the summer when temperature is high. Depending on species, oxygen deficiency cause lower yield due to reduction water and mineral uptake by plants. On other hand, plants under stress reduce nitrate accumulation, thus ameliorating produce quality. In present work spinach was autumn different volumes (252, 126 60 l per m2 cultivated area) aerated or non nutrient solution. Aeration kept...
