Abstract A rock cairn, with two matchbooks buried beneath, was found on the summit of highest hill Thomas Island, Bunger Hills, East Antarctica. The are most likely from United States World War II-era ration packs, which were distributed to various military and civilian expeditions mid-1940s into 1950s. Hills first visited by Navy ‘Operation Highjump’ in February 1947, when a seaplane landed marine inlet, rather than lake as reported previously. Island Windmill’ January 1948, survey point...
Over the last decades, climate change led to only moderate changes of East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS). In recent years, however, modelling approaches and field experiments have shown that also EAIS is increasingly affected by ice mass losses. order obtain information on temporal/spatial sheet at margins major glaciers in Antarctica, northern Bunger Hills were visited within frame EASI3 "RV Polarstern" expedition period between 19. 29. February 2024. From a ca 1-km-long lake, here informally...
Thomas Island (Bunger Hills, East Antarctica) is a 34 square kilometre, deglaciated area potentially impacted by the Antarctic ice sheet and Remenchus Glacier from east, Shackleton Ice Shelf north Edisto west. Its glacial geology reveals complex interplay between these masses, which operate with different spatial temporal dynamics. This poster maps erosional depositional features allows inference of history advance retreat, sets framework for quantitative dating its deglaciation history....
Antonine 1 structures include timber buildings and a stone furnace, while 2 saw rebuilding on much grander scale with massive one building, all set grid cobbled roads. Evidence of industrial activity may production type pottery unique to Inveresk. Other finds consist iron tools, bronze jewellery, samian glass, some unexpectedly high quality. A R
