Isotopes at the limits of nuclear existence are great interest for their critical role in astrophysical reactions and exotic structure. Experimentally, nuclides challenging to address due low production cross-sections, overwhelming amounts contamination, lifetimes typically less than a second. To this end, Multiple-Reflection Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer TITAN-TRIUMF facility was built determine atomic masses. This device is preferred tool work with its ability resolve species from...
Abstract The ISAC-FEBIAD is an electron impact ion source typically used to ionize radioactive molecules or isotopes of elements beyond the reach either surface laser sources. FEBIAD’s key tuning parameters are cathode temperature defining number electrons created; anode voltage establishing energy; and magnetic field controlling density inside volume. However, these scanned in a small limited range when optimizing source. Recent investigations have shown need explore entire operational...
Abstract The FEBIAD ion source is routinely used to produce radioactive ions of halogens, molecules, and noble gases in several ISOL facilities worldwide. At TRIUMF, an extensive numerical experimental campaign has been performed fundamentally understand the while improving its reliability overall performance. Particularly, cathode temperature studied by pyrometric measurements, Schottky analysis simulations properly electron emission driving ionization. values found are consistent within...

Abstract At TRIUMF’s ISAC facility, 1+ Radioactive Ion Beams (RIBs) of noble gases, halogens, and molecules are created using a Forced Electron Beam Induced Arc Discharge (FEBIAD) ion source. Reported ionization efficiencies for FEBIADs range from 10% to 25% 40 Ar + , while TRIUMF-FEBIAD efficiency seems be < 1% with 90% emittance <15 μm. As RIB sources aim high efficiency, an experimental numerical campaign was conducted investigate the comparably low observed. The results indicate...
