Little information is available on acute liver failure (ALF) in the United States. We gathered demographic data retrospectively for a 2-year period from July 1994 to June 1996 all cases of ALF 13 hospitals (12 transplant centers). Data patients included age, hepatic coma grade admission, presumed cause, transplantation, and outcome. Among 295 patients, 74 (25%) survived spontaneously, 121 (41%) underwent 99 (34%) died without undergoing transplantation. Ninety-two (76%) 1 year after...

ABSTRACT Acetaminophen (APAP) has been formulated as immediate‐, modified‐, and extended‐release tablets (APAP‐IR, ‐MR, ‐ER, respectively). However, there was concern that APAP‐MR previously available in Europe could form a bezoar after large overdose, leading to delayed absorption atypical pharmacokinetics (PK) compared APAP‐IR, current treatment guidelines developed for APAP overdose prevent severe hepatotoxicity are inappropriate APAP‐MR. In contrast, APAP‐ER caplets the United States...

Context.—Before the development of human colonic neoplasms, epithelial cells showed altered growth and differentiation. These alterations characterized mucosa at risk for cancer formation were termed intermediate biomarkers risk. Modifications toward more normal features by nutrients or drugs are putative approaches to chemoprevention colon cancer.Objective.—To determine whether increasing calcium intake via dairy products alters normal.Design.—Randomized, single-blind, controlled...

Wilson's disease is an inherited disorder of copper metabolism characterized by reduced biliary excretion, which results in accumulation tissues with liver injury and failure. Orthotopic transplantation (OLT) can be lifesaving for patients who present fulminant failure unresponsive to medical therapy. The aim this study review our experience OLT disease.Between 1988 2000, 21 OLTs were performed 17 disease. Patient demographics, pre-OLT laboratory data, operative early late postoperative...

Hepatic venous outflow obstruction caused by hepatic vein thrombosis (HVT) is a manifestation of hypercoagulable state, most commonly myeloproliferative disorder (MPD). In the past, HVT was thought to have poor prognosis unless treated surgically with portosystemic shunt or orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). The aim this study assess whether early diagnosis underlying hematologic and institution appropriate medical therapy altered outcome. We reviewed charts 22 patients evaluated at our...

In 2019, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) initiated a review carcinogenic hazard potential acetaminophen. The objective analysis herein was to inform this by assessing whether variability in patient baseline characteristics (e.g. glutathione (GSH) levels, pharmacokinetics, and capacity hepatic antioxidants) leads differences at different dosing schemes: maximum labeled doses 4 g/day, repeated above dose (>4–12 g/day), acute overdoses acetaminophen (>15...
