Abstract Lawsonite eclogite and garnet blueschist occur as metre‐scale blocks within serpentinite mélange in the southern New England Orogen (SNEO) eastern Australia. These high‐ P fragments are products of early Palaeozoic subduction palaeo‐Pacific plate beneath East Gondwana. Lu–Hf, Sm–Nd, U–Pb geochronological data from Port Macquarie show that mineral assemblages formed between c. 500 470 Ma ago became mixed together a serpentinite‐filled channel. Age P–T modelling indicate lawsonite at...
Abstract The Rocky Beach Metamorphic Melange contains metre-scale phacoids of high- P low- T metamorphic rocks embedded in chlorite-actinolite schist. include eclogite, glaucophane schist and omphacitite provide evidence for four episodes metamorphism with mineral assemblages: M 1 = actinolite-glaucophane-titanite-apaite, 2 almandine-omphacite-lawsonite ±quartz, 3 phengite- glaucophane-K-feldspar-quartz, 4 chlorite-actinolite-calcite-quartz-titanite-white mica ± albite talc. -M occurred at a...
Abstract Structural studies in the Sydney region have revealed presence of vertical to near-vertical, north-northeast-striking faults that are manifest as joint swarms and highly brecciated zones which gouge varying thickness is developed. Strike-slip movement accompanied by minor dip-slip, normal occurred on these faults. Timing K–Ar dating illite illite–smectite fractions extracted from fault gouges, was attempted. These dates were compared with obtained host-rocks. ages determined 2–10 μm...
AbstractStructural and K–Ar dating studies of gouge in N–S, NNE E–W-trending faults four locations the Sydney–Hunter region are reported. The fault zones manifest as joint swarms highly brecciated containing with authigenic illite produced a result fluid infiltration. Strike-slip movement accompanied by minor dip-slip, normal occurred on faults, dip slip N–S faults. In this study, from NE-trending, steep, SE-dipping showing dip-slip at Cut 10, Hunter Expressway an E–W-trending, steep...
Abstract Gouges formed in north-northeast-striking fault zones of the Sydney region and associated host-rocks were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM optical microscopy order to determine their mineralogy. XRD studies reveal that illite, illite–smectite, kaolinite, quartz dickite are present varying proportions. Kübler Indices (0.54–0.71) low smectite contents illite–smectite (<10% smectite) most gouges host-rocks, indicate assemblages at temperatures between 120 150°C. Those Heathcote Road,...
Abstract The Sydney Harbour crossing is a key element of Metro City & Southwest, which includes 15.5 km twin tube running tunnels extending from Chatswood at the north through to Sydenham, south Central Buisness District (CBD). One features 1 % length alignment that passes under Harbour. rest rock, but harbour designed pass sediments and mixed face conditions undersea. An in depth study analysis was required confirm feasibility safe construction this short tunnel sub‐aqueous, soft ground...
Within the Lorne Basin, Mesozoic granitoid plutons and dacitic to rhyolitic extrusions form extensive components in a faulted, eroded Triassic sedimentary basin. Late Cenozoic plugs flows of evolved basalts represent easterly extensions Comboyne Volcano. The basin marks terminal outpost New England Orogen, much modified by later alkaline felsic intrusions flow remnants. Many origins are invoked for its tectonic genesis magmatic evolution including plate tectonic, caldera even meteoritic...
In this paper, we discuss the currently identified major faults in Sydney region based on mapping of deep excavations, tunnels and outcrops. Further, present K-Ar data obtained from illite-smectite fault gouges that occur several zones. Our studies have shown major, NNE trending dominate ages 122 to 134 Ma are recorded <2μm fraction extracted gouges. We believe these dates record an overprinting event possibly related underplating mafic magma associated with early stages breakup Gondwana.
