An experimental model of herpetic infection based on intranasal challenge 12-day-old mice with herpes simplex virus (type 1) has been developed for assessment the efficacy a variety antiviral compounds clinical potential: cytosine arabinoside, adenine iododeoxyuridine, ribavirin, chloriteoxidized oxyamylose, polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid, and interferon. The employed is reminiscent encephalitis in humans both portal entry (nasopharyngeal cavity) mode transmission (nerve route) to...

Mice infected intravenously with vaccinia virus develop characteristic lesions over the entire tail surface. This experimental infection presents a highly sensitive and reliable model for evaluating antivaccinia activity of antiviral compounds. Ara-C (1 -β-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine), ribavirin (1-β-D-ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-tria-zole-3-carboxamide), IUdR (5-iodo-2′-deoxyuridine) as well two novel analogs IUdR, EtUdR (5-ethyl-2′-deoxyuridine), NCSUdR (5-thiocyanato-2′-deoxyuri-dine), were found...

Dimedone and its derivates are used as selective probes for the nucleophilic detection of sulfenic acids in biological samples. Qualitative analyses suggested that dimedone also reacts with cyclic sulfenamides. Furthermore, under physiological conditions, must compete highly concentrated nucleophile glutathione. We therefore quantified reaction kinetics a sulfenamide model peptide glutathione peroxiredoxin presence or absence show is stabilized at lower pH it dimedone. While reactions...

We investigate small tantalum clusters Tan+, n = 2–4, for their capability to cleave N2 adsorption spontaneously. utilize infrared photon dissociation (IR-PD) spectroscopy of isolated and size selected under cryogenic conditions within a buffer gas filled ion trap, we augment our experiments by quantum chemical simulations (at DFT level). All Tan+ clusters, seem efficiently. confirm extend previous study ambient on Ta2+ cluster [Geng et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 115, 11680–11687...

Mice bearing sarcoma 180 tumors were irradiated by 3000-MHz microwave at a power density of 40 mW/cm/sup 2/ for 2 h daily during 14 consecutive days. The irradiation resulted in an increase rectal temperature 3-4/spl deg/C. Hyperthermal treatment was started on the second day after tumor-cell transplantation. Some animals also received injections polyhiboinosinic acid-polyribocytidylecacid (poly I-poly C), mu g/g, or mouse interferon (100 IU/g), both. Survival animals, mass tumors,...

WISH cell cultures were irradiated 24 h after passage with 3 GHz microwaves for 30 min at intensites of 5 or 20 mW cm-2. After times from exposure 1, 4, 8, 12 and the cells incubated muCi ml-2 3H-glycine autoradiographs made using stripping film. The incorporation amino acid was measured four groups, 0-10, 10-20, 20-40 above 40 grains per cell. Karyometric analysis performed 12, 48 exposure. 50 newly prepared pyrimidine derivatives and trimethinium were tested for the inhibitory activity of vaccinia virus, Newcastle disease virus (NDV) western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) multiplication using agar-diffusion plaque-inhibition test. Most exerted an effect on virus. The highest selective was found with 2-amino-5-dimethylaminomethyleneaminopyrimidine (derivative No. 35). Much lower observed several in WEE inhibition.
