ABSTRACT
Background: Although the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension trial) diet is among therapeutic lifestyle changes recommended for individuals with hypertension (HTN), accordance not known.Methods: Using data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1988-1994 1999-2004 periods, self-reported HTN was estimated based on 9 nutrient targets (fat, saturated fat, protein, cholesterol, fiber, magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium) (score range, 0-9).Using 1999-2004, we compared score demographic groups in age-and energy-adjusted models modeled odds of a DASH-accordant dietary pattern (Ն4.5) using multivariable logistic regression.The score, accordance, percentage participants achieving individual were estimates NHANES data.Results: Based 4386 known recent survey period (1999-2004), mean (SE) after adjustment age energy intake, 2.92 (0.05), 19.4% (1.2%) classified as accordant.In regression models, associated older age, nonblack ethnicity, higher education, diabetes mellitus.Accordance 7.3% lower (26.7% [1.1%]) (PϽ.001), reflecting fewer patients meeting total magnesium.
