ABSTRACT
Background: Status epilepticus (SE) frequently does not respond to common first-line anticonvulsants. In a substantial portion of patients, administration anticonvulsant anesthetics is inevitable.Even this aggressive approach fails terminate SE in an undefined number cases. We have coined the term malignant for most severe variant SE.Objective: To assess frequency, risk factors, and inhospital outcome SE.Design: Retrospective cohort study.Setting: Neurologic intensive care unit large university hospital.Patients: Sample 35 episodes responding anticonvulsants 34 patients.Main Outcome Measures: Predictive prognostic features with persistent epileptic activity after high-dose compared remainder cases refractory failure firstline anticonvulsants. Results: that could be controlled by resulted 20% cases.Patients were significantly younger than patients (P=.03).Encephalitis was identified as independent factor (P =.008).Outcome poor, longer duration seizure (PϽ.001), stay neurologic (PϽ.001) hospital (P=.007), more functional dependency at discharge from =.04).Conclusions: Malignant rare anticonvulsants. The patient typically young suffers encephalitis.Such should treated aggressively early course prevent SE.
