ABSTRACT
Hearing and vision problems are individually associated with increased dementia risk, but the impact of having concurrent hearing deficits, ie, dual sensory impairment (DSI), on risk dementia, including its major subtypes Alzheimer disease (AD) vascular (VaD), is not well known. To evaluate whether DSI incident in older adults. This prospective cohort study from Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) was conducted between 1992 1999, as many 8 years follow-up. The multicenter, population-based sample recruited Medicare eligibility files 4 US communities academic medical centers. Of 5888 participants aged 65 CHS, 3602 underwent cranial magnetic resonance imaging completed modified Mini-Mental State Examination to 1994 part CHS Cognition Study. A total 227 were excluded due prevalent leaving a 3375 without at baseline. hypothesis that would be compared no impairment. association duration also evaluated. Data analysis November 2019 February 2020.Hearing impairments collected via self-report baseline 5 follow-up visits.All-cause AD, VaD, classified by multidisciplinary committee using standardized criteria.A 2927 information all available visits included (mean [SD] age, 74.6 [4.8] years; 1704 [58.2%] women; 455 [15.5%] African American or Black; 2472 [85.5%] White). Compared impairment, all-cause (hazard ratio [HR], 2.60; 95% CI, 1.66-2.06; P < .001), AD (HR, 3.67; 2.04-6.60; .001) VaD 2.03; 1.00-4.09; = .05).In this study, particularly AD. Evaluation adults may help identify those high developing dementia.
