ABSTRACT
Microporous membranes act as selective barriers and play an important role in industrial gas separation water purification. The permeability of such is inversely proportional to their thickness. Synthetic two-dimensional materials (2DMs), with a thickness one few atoms or monomer units are ideal candidates for developing membranes. Here, groundbreaking advances the design, synthesis, processing, application 2DMs ion separations, well desalination presented. This report describes syntheses, structures, mechanical properties 2DMs. established methods processing into permeation also discussed mechanism performances addressed. Current challenges emerging research directions, which need be addressed next-generation membranes, summarized.
