ABSTRACT
Calprotectin is an antimicrobial peptide primarily secreted by neutrophils. Furthermore, calprotectin secretion increases in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) polyps (CRSwNP) and positively correlates neutrophil markers. However, CRSwNP known to be associated type 2 inflammation related tissue eosinophilia. Therefore, the authors investigated expression eosinophils eosinophil extracellular traps (EETs) explored associations between clinical findings of CRS.A total 63 participated, diagnosed CRS were classified based on Japanese Epidemiological Survey Refractory Eosinophilic Chronic Rhinosinusitis (JESREC) score. The performed hematoxylin eosin staining, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence calprotectin, myeloperoxidase (MPO), major basic protein (MBP), citrullinated histone H3 participant's tissues. Finally, correlations data examined.Calprotectin-positive cells are co-localized not only MPO-positive but also MBP-positive human was involved EETs traps. number calprotectin-positive correlated blood eosinophils. In addition, olfactory function, Lund-Mackay computed tomography score, JESREC score.Calprotectin, neutrophils, expressed which functions as peptide, may play important role innate immune response its EET involvement. could reflect a disease severity biomarker for CRS.
