ABSTRACT
The modification of surfaces by the deposition a robust overlayer provides an excellent handle with which to tune properties bulk substrate those interest. Such control over surface becomes increasingly important continuing efforts at down-sizing active components in optoelectronic devices, and corresponding increase area/volume ratio. Relevant include degree is wetted water or oil. Analogously, for biosensing applications there increasing interest so-called "romantic surfaces": that repel all biological entities, apart from one, it binds strongly. systems require both long lasting highly specific tuning properties. This Review presents one approach obtain modifications oxides, namely covalent attachment monolayers.
