ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT This study reports the modification of commercial cation‐exchange membrane by layer‐by‐layer adsorption polyethyleneimine and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) to endow them with monovalent ion selectivity. The chemical morphological changes modified surface were examined ATR‐FTIR SEM, respectively. permselectivity for cations membranes was investigated electrodialysis experiments. effects deposited bilayer number, salt concentration, pH dipping polyelectrolyte solutions on selectivity investigated. Meanwhile, resistance measured taking energy consumption into consideration. multilayer crosslinked using epichlorohydrin improve stability, durability composite studied. Separation mechanism also It is demonstrated that bivalent are mainly rejected electrostatic repulsion from positive charge membranes. sieving effect dense structure skin layer becomes more pronounced number layers increased. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
