ABSTRACT
Abstract The wide‐field spectroscopic survey telescope (WST) is proposed to become the next large optical/near infrared facility for European southern observatory (ESO) once extremely (ELT) has operational. While latter optimized unprecedented sensitivity and adaptive‐optics assisted image quality over a small field of view, WST addresses need volumes in spectroscopy with light‐collecting power 10‐m class telescope. Its unique layout will feature combination multi‐object integral simultaneously. For intended capacity this layout, very number detectors are needed. complexity detector systems presents challenges that discussed focus on novel approaches innovative designs can be expected emerge anticipated 20‐year timeline project.
