ABSTRACT
Summary On many urban low‐grade or branch roads, especially in medium small cities China, bicyclists and motorists commonly share the non‐barrier road surface. Because bicycles are unpredictable unstable when moving, motorized vehicles must reduce their speed to safely approach overtake them. In this study, gradual deceleration process a vehicle undergoes before it passes bicycle was analyzed. The motorist assumed prefer comfortable select higher rate only distance insufficient car's expected value at rate. Cellular automata (CA) simulations were used reveal flow characteristics of reacting traveling along roadside, results show that for general velocities on capacity is not related number present. However, average travel time significantly affected by presence small. addition, vehicles' more influenced disturbances than large. Field observations surveys validate traffic behaviors simulation results. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
