Preliminary results of the Nottingham breast self-examination education programme

ABSTRACT
Between June 1979 and December 1984, 49,573 women (study population) between the ages of 45 64 years living in one health district were invited to attend breast self-examination sessions as part DHSS 'UK Trial Early Detection Breast Cancer'. Of 50.2 per cent attended for education. A total 319 cancers diagnosed study population during this period. The tumour characteristics, patient prognostic groups survival have been compared with a control consisting consecutive immediately before start trial, same age group district. There has significant reduction size at presentation operable tumours (P less than 0.01) there small (3.4 cent) lymph node involvement, but is not significant. rates both situ advanced carcinoma significantly changed following introduction education programme. At stage no overall difference identified two median follow up limited (25 months).
