Randomized clinical trial of postoperative hernia prophylaxis in open bariatric surgery

ABSTRACT
Postoperative hernia following bariatric procedures is more common than in other groups of surgical patients, and remains a serious problem. Gastric bypass the most often performed procedure and, despite increasing popularity laparoscopic approach, many morbidly obese patients are still offered open procedures. The aim this study was to assess effects prophylactic polypropylene mesh undergoing gastric by-pass surgery.The randomized 74 Roux-en-Y into two groups: wound closure with (n = 36) or without 38) mesh. Mean(s.d.) body mass index group were 137.3(24.5) kg 46.2(7.1) kg/m(2) non-mesh 139.0(24.9) 46.8(7.6) respectively. In group, closed suture. Hernia developed eight but none group. duration hospital stay similar both mean(s.d.) 8.4(3.2) 10.3(5.9) days (P 0.092). There no complications either group.The use prevented development did not lengthen stay.
