ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND To the authors’ knowledge, incidence of biliary tract cancer (BTC) in Canada is unknown. In current study, authors sought to describe epidemiology BTC using a large population‐based database from Ontario, Canada. METHODS The study was cohort Ontario Cancer Registry. Patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (IHCC), extrahepatic (EHCC), and gallbladder (GBC) diagnosed between 1994 2012 were included. Age‐standardized mortality rates compared rate ratios (IRRs). Overall survival time diagnosis calculated for 3 eras: through 1999, 2000 2005, 2006 2012. number patients receiving chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery determined linked clinical data. RESULTS A total 9039 cases (1569 IHCC cases, 4337 EHCC 3133 GBC cases) identified. increased by 1.6% per year (IRR, 1.016; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.008‐1.024 [ P <.001]). 7.0% among 1.070; CI, 1.058‐1.081 <.001]) 1.8% 1.018; 1.009‐1.027 <.001]), whereas remained unchanged 0.991; 0.982‐1.001 = .086]). median 8.3 months, improvement noted over period (6.1 months 1994‐1999 vs 8.5 2000‐2005 10.3 2006‐2012 longest (11.3 months), followed (6.4 months) (6.2 months). percentage chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy ( <.001), decreased <.001). CONCLUSIONS An during observed. Explanations observed temporal require further exploration. 2016;122:2534–43 . © 2016 American Society
