ABSTRACT
Abstract We describe a process for the selective conversion of C 6 ‐polyols into 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (5‐HMF) in biphasic systems organic carbonate/water (OC/W), with cerium(IV) phosphates as catalysts. Different reaction parameters such OC/W ratio, catalyst loading, time, and temperature, were investigated dehydration fructose. Under best conditions, yield 67.7 % selectivity 93.2 was achieved at 423 K after h using [(Ce(PO 4 ) 1.5 (H 2 O)(H 3 O) 0.5 )] catalyst. A maximum 70 same 12 h. At end reaction, removed by centrifugation, phase separated from water evaporated vacuo (with solvent recovery), solid 5‐HMF isolated (purity >99 %). The recovery reuse relationship between structure OC efficiency extraction are discussed. system influences lifetime catalysts positively compared to only water.
