ABSTRACT
Abstract More data are needed for a better understanding of the long‐term influence wider and combined stressful events in chimpanzee personality development. We evaluated effects bushmeat trade outcomes on development 84 African sanctuary chimpanzees. The chimpanzees presented different backgrounds regarding maternal care, social exposure, abuse. traits using Cattell 16PF questionnaire, first application this questionnaire species. found that were rated as higher anxiety after long deprivation during infancy juvenility, if high human exposure was experienced. Mother‐reared lower restraint than hand‐reared Finally, mother‐reared less dominant when they had experienced severe mistreatment. Results suggest wide range possible could be potentially shaping rescued chimpanzees’ demonstrating detrimental consequences pet trade.
