ABSTRACT
Abstract Ecology must attract and retain diverse talented people to produce innovative research relevant solutions 21st‐century environmental problems. Careers culture form the foundation of scientific advancement, substantial progress has been made over recent decades in both realms. Yet, important challenges persist expanding career paths, inclusion underrepresented groups, communication with public. The ESA Student Section organized a horizon scanning exercise address following goals: (1) identify that ecologists contend or expect careers outreach society, (2) anticipate opportunities help meet challenges, (3) concrete steps could be taken by individual laboratories, institutions, foster progress. In spring 2016, solicited input from student members working group assess state discipline envision how we might cultivate more inclusive effective community. We identified three major challenges. First, PhDs are produced faster than academic positions become available disconnects between academia other sectors may keep early‐career realizing breadth positions. propose an online jobs hub make non‐academic accessible ecologists. also suggest students develop skills portfolios prepare for Second, composition who differs broader partially due implicit biases institutional barriers. reduce attrition diversity ecology include countering creating mentorship networks. offer improve recruitment increasing awareness among high school undergraduates providing engage ecological research. Finally, is only if public perceives it be. science begin cultivating trust. ad hoc all insufficient; translational should hired every department formal training necessary. hope this paper catalyzes critical thinking partnerships students, professional ecologists, ensure future vibrant.
