ABSTRACT
Abstract This study presents the implementation of an online model updating algorithm within a full‐scale hybrid simulation (HS) six story, four bay steel moment frame. The experimental substructure consists cruciform subassembly generating critical data on nonlinear behavior first story column and two beams with reduced beam sections (RBSs) each side. focuses modeling parameters plastic hinge elements representing RBSs in numerical model. A smooth plasticity is utilized for hinges identified from on‐line through modified version unscented Kalman filter. HS shows that based simple hysteretic updated are able to capture characteristic observed experiments. Due fracture flanges experiments, selective concept proposed allow multiple components accounting asymmetric variability response. method validated virtual HSs better identify isolate effects other behavioral characteristics. combination results physical tests highlights benefits local overall system‐level
