Case of pediatric acute promyelocytic leukemia presenting as extramedullary tumor of the mandible

ABSTRACT
Background Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a malignant subtype of acute myeloid caused by the PML‐retinoic acid receptor (RAR)α fusion gene. APL may be discovered in adulthood and diagnosed after spontaneous gingival bleeding or difficulty hemostasis oral surgery such as tooth extraction. However, extremely rare children. Methods Results A 1‐year‐old boy presented with mass on mentum mandible. The marked periosteal reaction was seen CT MRI, leading to strong suspicion bone‐derived tumor sarcoma. Chromosome banding fluorescence situ hybridization (FISH) showed PML‐RAR α, confirming diagnosis APL. Treatment tretinoin immediately initiated. No signs recurrence have been noted 1 year treatment. Conclusions We report herein case involving an infant who extramedullary mandible, whom we treated good results. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck 35: E310–E313, 2013
